I have several leather holsters with the Smith & Wesson logo on the back. I’m guessing they were probably made by or for Smith & Wesson during the 60s or 70s.

Does anyone know what the numbers stamped on the holsters mean? Is there a chart or other reference that identifies which models fit these holsters?

For example, holsters marked “21 36” fit 6” K frames and those marked “21 62” fit 2” J frames.

What are these worth?

I can't locate the post, but someone has a scan of the fit chart.

I have a 1970 S&W catalog that has the fit chart with photos of holsters. The first two numbers are the holster model number, the second two are gun model specific (not always frame specific) and barrel length.

I have no idea as to value...

Up until the last 6 months, you could find almost any S&W holster you wanted on evil bay.

Now they are scarce and hard to find. I have 5 or 6 for various handguns but I have several 4" N frames I would like to find one for, Had to settle for a Hunter, which is almost identical but still, not a Smith

Great info.....this forum is awesome!

I also have another holster marked "21 83". Didn't see that number combination on the J, K or N frame fit charts. Based on the wear inside, it appears to be for an automatic.

IIRC, it became "Gould & Goodrich" and still makes holsters.

The OP has pretty well figured it out. The first two numbers are the model holster, in this case a #21 Blazer which is a sporting style. The second two numbers are the frame size and barrel length. 36 means 5" or 6" K frames. 62 is 2" J frames, Charter Arms Undercover, Wesson 11 - 15 or any of the small H&R's. Most of the 62 codes will also take a Detective Special. A "B" in front of the numbers means black as opposed to russet. A "W" following the numbers means basket weave and a "C" means flower carved.

The fit on these old holster is no where near as precise as we expect today so most of them will take more than one gun type. The S&W holsters have been pretty cheap but you would think they are about due to start going up. Time takes a greater toll on leather as opposed to metal and wood, much like boxes, so they become harder to find.

There used to be the entire listing for the holsters in a thread, but sadly alot of stuff was lost recently..
The FAQs are gone too..
I have a Like new S&W branded holster & from what I read on the other thread before it was lost it should fit a Combat Commander..
Anybody need/want this holster for a decent price, It's black with a thumb strap..
It's marked B21 39 & it doesn't fit a Model 39
I didn't want to start a thread in the classifieds but if anyone is interested please give me an email..

Several years ago I was looking at shoulder holsters in a local pawn shop and found a S&W large s. holster that had a mark "10 (S)" I asked if I could bring a pistol in the next day to try in it, sure, so I did, it fits a N frame 8 3/8 and also is cut to clear a scope mount I bought for about 30 dollars. I am a sucker for shoulder holsters I even had at one time a Law Man Leather Dirty Harry rig.took 4 or 5 months to get it and when I did it was not Quite what I wanted so I sold it and got 2 Jackass brand s. holsters for a 6" and 8 3/8" N frames they were better for me.

Hate to drag out a sail-cat, but the link has died.

Same question 15 months later..

Does anyone have or can point to an old S&W catalog with the holster model table?? It looks like one in the early 70t's.

Thanks
JJ

you have the wrong holster

This is a question that I have wanted to ask for some time now. I have a M629 8 3/8" and was looking for a field holster. On eBay I found a S&W Model 21 84 that fits the 8 3/8" barrel but is really tight on the cylinder and the retention strap. I can not find this model in this listing.

A 21-84 is the Blazer model holster to fit the COLT Huntsman, Woodsman or Marksman 22 auto loader with 6" barrel. The correct S&W holster for an 83/8 Mod 29 is the model 21-28. I hope this helps

Smith & Wesson also made/subcontracted a line of hoslters made from a material (plastic of some type) called "Wessonhide." I don't think they lasted long. I remember I had one back in the 80's I guess it was and the gun never did fit right, and it was stickey to draw from.

The holster here is a Smith & Wesson leather one for a "K" frame. I forget the model number off the top of my head, but most any medium sized D/A will fit it. I know it's had a Ruger Speed Six, and a Colt Official Police in it. A Dan Wesson 22 also now that I think about it.

The gunbelt however is "Wessonhide." It didn't make a very good holster, but the belt was OK. :D
