That could be Armaloy or another type of hard chrome. It was very popular for hard use cop guns in the revolver days. One of the best revolvers I ever owned, and in the book of tears for selling it was my Armaloy'd 6" Highway Patrolman. I also have an Armaloy 520. It is a great finish for a working gun.
I've been waiting for this thread to pop back up.
I feel privileged to add my humble Highway Patrolman revolvers to this great thread.

Great gun. Really early example. I'm talking one of the earliest to show up on this forum. I can only recall 3-4 that had earlier serial numbers. Do you have a date for it? I'd guess May 1954, but it could be April.
Need some help. I've owned this gun for about 15 yrs. took it as trade on some tile work done for a guy instead of paying me. It stayed in the closet until about 3 months ago. I will try to upload pictures as soon a figure it out. Got a buyer HOT for it but don't even know where to start as far a value. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This doesn't make sense to me. N20000 goes from 1974-1977 but N40000 goes from 1977-1978? My serial number is N258### how do I know the exact year it was made?

You don't, without a letter.
Only a letter from Mr Jinks will tell you when it was shipped out.
They weren't shipped "in order".
Love these HPs. I think I'm starting to like them better than my 27s.
This is my latest. A 1959 4 screw Model 28 No Dash with 4 inch barrel.
Note the target hammer and trigger along with the walnut diamond target grips.
If you're going to have one, you might as well have one fully loaded(pardon the pun)

Adding my Highway Patrolman to the list...
Here is my 6" 28-2. Picked it up last week. Stocks are not original, but the gun looks so much better with these than with the Hogue grips that came on it from the previous owner. This is my first of many S&W revolvers. Serial number is N274,xxx

I'll add a new picture of my 28-2 serial # S271xxx, trigger shoe has been removed, grips replaced with some i don't mind banging up and a grip adapter, holster is El Paso.
My 28-2 came with an old Safariland flap holster. Tan color with a greenish looking lining.
Marked for S&W Large or something like that.
I can't find any information about it on the web.
Anyone know of these?
You can tell it's held Magna stocked Highway Patrolman in it for quite some time!
Followed me home. A 4", and it goes quite nicely with my 6" that was manufactured 1200 frames later (maybe!). It's sure not perfect, some freckling and theres a ding about a half inch from the end of the barrel on the right side. The worst of it is that PJ Anderson electropenciled his name on the left side of the frame. Still, it was a fair price for what it was.
I'm having trouble postin pics right now but I'll get some up soon.
I'm looking at a 28-2 6" blued at a local gun store, Serial #N530086. It is a pinned barrel but is not a recessed cylinder. Is this possible or could the cylinder be from a later 28? I'm considering it for a shooter since it has two small scratches on the left side of the barrel near the frame. The chambers and bore are in excellent shape as is the action.

It's most likely a replacement cylinder. The non recessed cylinder didn't come about on the N frame till the -3, around 1983.
The 28-2 you're looking at was manufactured sometime in 1978.
How much is the asking price?
Thanks for the responses! I went to look at this 28-2 again. My apologies for some wrong information in my post (big face palm). This gun does in fact have a recessed cylinder. They were asking $599, I offered $550 and they countered with $570. So I bought it and am on a hold till Thursday morning at the latest. I think it sat around for almost 10 days at the store because an old model 28 is neither stainless, real shiny nor an automatic. Not very glamorous looking in a case full of newer, snazzier guns. It does need a thorough cleaning which I'm looking forward to doing. I think the lighter barrel is maybe easier handling than my new 586-6 6". This is only the second used gun I've ever bought. If it shoots as accurately as my 586, I'll be happy, and on the lookout for maybe a 4" 28.
Well that's a good ending to your story! Congratulations on one of the finest. 357s ever made!
You got a good deal in my opinion, but now you'll have to post pictures when you get it home.

Update… Took it to the range and it shoots accurately with a variety of jacketed and lead loads and didn't lead at all. However, I have discovered the ratchet on the cylinder looks very rough. It's peened badly and I'm worried about the timing becoming a problem. Must have had on my rose colored glasses when I inspected it before purchase. I'm planning to call S&W service Monday and see if they do repairs like this. Even if I end up with an expensive shooter, I'll consider it a lesson learned and enjoy the gun.

Little bit of an "odd duck" in the HP world. Here is my 4" 5 screw Highway Patrolman. S/N S130418. Shipped June 1956. This one is unique because it has serial matching non relieved target stocks. I will be sending for a factory letter soon. I will update this post after it arrives.
I suppose I may as well contribute. Here's my N4XXX (just because I don't know it) 28-2 with Collinscraft white corian and Tyler T grip...Haven't got to shoot it yet, but if it doesn't shoot well it will make a hell of a hammer!
It had a trigger shoe on it, so there's some gunk on the sides of the trigger I need to scrub off.
Ok here is my HP 28-2 that I bought two months ago. This gun has caused me lots of problems because now I'm hooked ! I find myself selling guns I didn't think I would ever sell just to fund my next S&W !
Came across this one a couple years ago. N102XXX 1973 according to SCSW.
Box and paperwork but no tools. Don't believe it's been fired outside the factory.
Here is one I picked up the other day for $475 OTD. Serial number on this one is N253XXX so its from the mid 70s. Although it has some holster wear, the barrel is bright and shiny, and the timing is excellent. It came with the target grips, and I've decided to use these rather than putting on Pachmayr grips. Judging by the holster wear, I'd guess this one was possibly issued to a PD, but there are no marks that I can see. This is my first 28-2, and I could not be happier!
