627-5PC. I like 5" barrels, stainless N frames. 8 shots doesn't hurt.

686 w/ 6" barrel. It was my first gun ever. It's scary accurate, durable, and has a unbelievable trigger. Almost everyone who tries it thinks I have had a trigger job done to it but I have not. I'm a big guy with big hands so the slightly front heavy feel of the full underlug is not a problem and really helps with recoil especially with the full power 125 gr. JHP's. For a while this was my only gun and I used it for target shooting, hunting, plinking as well for home protection. I bought this gun 18 yrs at a gun show brand new. Eventhough I have shot it helluva lot it's still as tight and accurate as the day I bought it.It is semi-retired and is currently my safe queen. As you can imagine it also has a great deal of sentimental value.

My 4" model 27.
It is a wonderful N frame gun that is smoother than butter on a hot sliding board.
Little recoil as well.
Peter.

My round butt Model 13. Fixed sight, three inch non shrouded barrel with full length ejector rod, hand filling round butt, what's not to like? Shoots everything from .38 target loads to full house .357's and everything in between. Simply put, the most all-business revolver S&W has ever made.

Well, I like all of them, modern or older. But..... I'll vote for the shorter 3 1/2" 8 shot M27 from Lew Horton.
With good grips, and moonclips from Ranch Products, it shoots great. Absolutely great. Uses the same holster and cleaning supplies as the 4" N frames. Handles well. Well made. Feels comforting. Teams up well with the J frame (or D frame) of your choice. A great Smith .357 wheelgun. And it was on sale!
It is making me look hard at the "standard" 627 Pro.

I agree 100%, Its the one gun that I will never get ride of.
when things where down and i had to sell all my guns, the only one I kept was my 686 6" and rigged up a carry rig so i could carry it concealed till I finally got a smaller gun to carry.
you just don't get rid of a gun that is that accurate.

I agree with Tom C, 627-5 PC is my favourite...
686 would be my second choice.

My 66 3 inch with sights. It just feels right, super accurate even with the short barrel and it just looks cool as hell! Next in line would be the Pre 27 3 1/2 inch, same reason as above plus the old craftsman build quality, fit and finish.

Stainless would be the 66 hands down. Blued would be the 19. Both in 4" bbl's and P&R. My .02 pesos.

Another vote for a Mod 27, in this case a -2 with a 5 inch bbl.
Get an older N frame S&W and see if it doesn't become your favorite.

Any K frame magnum. I have a sweet spot for the K frame in general, but there's just something about the 19 and 66.

You made me think . I cannot pick just one favorite.
If I was forced to grab one 357 and run for the door, it would be my 4" nickel model 27.
It will do everything any K or L frame will do and more. Shoot full power 170 grainers with no problem.
Shoot 38 wadcutters into 1" group at 25 yards and honestly, it's not much larger than an L frame.
I most often carry my 3" model 13 loaded with Glasers or 100gr. power ball.
The Combat Magnum. The 6" model 19. The 2 1/2" 19-5.
The 686 snubby. The 681pc .
The Highway Patrolman. All the model 27s.
Can't just pick one. Good luck , ,AL

Although I love my 8.75" RM and my pre 27 3.5"ers (a nickle and a blued) and a pre 28, along with all of my 27's, 28's, 13's, 19's, 66's, and a few of my 65's, my favorite "GO TO" gun is my all-business 3" P&R model 65-2 with Ahrends FG's:

My 4" 586-3. Best all around 357 by any company, any time, any where.
Strong enough for real 357s, great balance and the quintessential K frame grip.
Owned Smith 357s since 1970 and the 586 4" is the best of show...

My favorite is my 28-2. I picked it up cheap and had it worked on. Shoots like a dream. Used to belong to a PD just haven't found out which one yet. Has a number on the left side under the cylinder similiar to Texas DPS but already coresponded with them and they say it was not on of theirs. So that is my pick of the ones I have.

That's really neat! Looks like you built you own 2.5" Model 19 instead of finding one. Pretty cool idea.

Thanks ... Actually, I bought it like that .. except for the grips. Bought it on looks and feel alone, and had no idea that it was unusual..?
Was discussed on another thread along with one that is its twin. Suspicions are high that it may be a Jovino custom. ( I have no idea if it is or isn't ) As soon as '09 rolls around I'll try to get it lettered to see.

My favorite would probably be 6.5" Pre-27 5 screw; but if I would probably "carry" my 4" 66-1.

My FAVORITE Smith & Wesson .357 revolver? That's EASY--the Model 686. In my case, it is a four-inch 686-5 with the seven-shot cylinder--for the burglar who THINKS he can count. Paulie686.

I've bought and sold many, these two are keepers.
586-1 4" Tack driver
627-0 My Cadillac. Pop off the heaviest round you could possibly load into a .357 and it feels like a 38Spl. Accurate too.

+1
My Model 65 same-same only silver.
Smith & Wesson's fixed sight, round butt, .357 Magnum K frames are probably the world's finest combat revolvers.

Favorite for what?
For concealed carry, I like my 640-3. Don't mind scuffing up that IL equipped lead spitter. It's in a Kramer pocket holster with a speedloader next to it, and it's good to go.
For sweet shooting, give me the old RM with a 4 inch barrel, please.
I think that if I had to carry in an open holster for social events or for a secondary weapon for hunting or for wandering around in the boonies, I would want a 627 with again, a 4 inch barrel. And 8 shots, please.
If I was to use it for actual hunting, again I would probably want a 627, but with a longer barrel, of course.
