Within the industry, holster security is rated as Level I, Level II, and Level III, depending upon the types of features incorporated in the design. One can obtain high-security holsters suitable for extreme conditions (certain law enforcement and corrections applications come to mind) from several manufacturers.
Security is only one of the four factors that are important in a holster design. The other factors are comfort, accessibility, and concealability.
Every holster design involves compromises of these four factors, and the user must make decisions as to what level of compromise is suitable for his purposes.
Security (weapon retention) is obviously important. We do not wish to lose our weapons unintentionally, and we do not want to make it too easy for someone to disarm us.
Comfort is very important. If a holster is not comfortable you will not wear it, then should you need your weapon it will not be with you.
Accessibility is important. If you cannot readily access your weapon it will do you no good at a time of need.
Concealability is important for many users, as our society includes a few folks who react negatively (some to the point of panic) when they see that a person is armed. Plainclothes and undercover law enforcement personnel certainly don't wish to be "made", so they keep their weapons well concealed. Many citizens have a legitimate need to be armed for self-defense, but still need to go about their normal lives without undue notice.
So, evaluate your needs based upon your daily life, activities, physique, and wardrobe; peruse the catalogs and websites of holster makers to familiarize yourself with the various products available, and base your selection on what appears to be the best set of compromises to meet your requirements.
Best regards.
