Default tell us about your S&W 460 (w/ photos if you have them)!

...also, why did you choose one barrel length over another (ex., 5 inch or 8 3/8 inch barrel)? Photos, please!

Default 5" is the way to go......

Might as well make my first post.

I picked 5" so I could carry in a traditional hip holster, and still get some bbl length for sight plain.

Love this site, will be hanging around more I'm sure.

I purchased my 460v about 3 years ago then obtained my 4" 500 "Lew Horton" model the following year. I shoot the 460 more than the 500.

I use Hornady SST's in both...kaboom!!

I bought the long-tube 460XVR a couple of years ago. I won't bother to post a pic since it is a completely stock version. The only thing that distinguishes it now is that I managed to buy the extra muzzle brakes (solid cap plus two variant vent patterns) before the company discontinued them.

I just liked the idea of a major revolver that could chamber .45 Colt and .454 Casull as well as the .460 loads. Shoot it hard, shoot it soft -- an extremely adaptable revolver.

Given the size of the frame, a long barrel makes for a big piece of machinery, but I picked up a four-inch .500 to keep it company. That one's a little more compact and easier to haul around. Or even store, for that matter.

Here are my 460 & 500. I shoot the 500 more than the 460. I bought both used as package deals with dies and reloading components.

I too have the long barreled 460 from the Performance Center. I thought I wanted it for hunting but it weighs too much when compared to my Encore's or Contenders. Love the cartridge....

Nice photos---love both the 5" and the 8"!

For those who have shot both, how do the two barrel lengths compare in shooting? The S&W web site says 2330 FPS/200 Grain for the 8 inch and 2100 Ft/Sec Muzzle Velocity for the 5 inch.

The 5 sure seems like it would be easier/handier to tote (as some posts above suggest), but I guess there are tradeoffs in velocity, effective reach, recoil and, of course, site radius. But how much difference? Is it worth the extra length in your opinion? How doe this barrel difference translate into practical effects/issues? Any input on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

I just picked up my 'first' 460 on Saturday.

I had resisted the X-Frame's for a long time, but finally decided to cave on a .460 (over the .500) because I already have other guns chambered in .45 Colt and .454 Casull... just keeping things easier/cheaper to reload and shoot.

I went with the 3.5" model for a few reasons. First, I'm not big on compensators on handguns; second, I'm not big on long barreled handguns; third, I definitely prefer the unfluted cylinder, and; fourth, I wanted the OD colored Tamers.

I spend a lot of time in the mountains, and while I would probably still carry my .454 Ruger Alaskan more often than this, the overall length of this gun is about the same as the several other 4" revolvers I own so as a hiking gun it would be ok in a good chest rig or something like a weight distributing pancake belt holster.

I'll admit, I was suffering a bit of buyers remorse after getting it home and running into mechanical issues (details in a separate thread)... but I discovered that they were 'just' due to junked up internals. After a good detail strip and cleaning, my buyers remorse has gone away.

Just a little size comparison with a Wiley Clapp 3" GP-100...
