Hi guys,

I just bought my first revolver (686) last week and I love it. In fact, I'm already thinking about my next purchase. I've been looking at the S&W 460V w/ 5" barrel.

Anyone here have that gun? What do you think about it (reliability, recoil, feel, etc.)?

Many Thanks!

I love mine cause it makes big holes.....

I like the fact it will shoot 45 colt; 454 casull, and the 460. I was actually thinking of a Freedom Arms or Magnum Research BFR in 454 casull when I first read about the 460.

I like the shorter (5" vs. what is it 8 1/2") barrel.

I like the big rubber grip. I don't find the recoil to be that bad. I have a Ruger Alaskan in 454 casull ---the recoil is comparable.

On the down side: ammo and initial purchase are not cheap. I have dies, but haven't started reloading for mine yet.

One of my next purchases will be a Simply Rugged holster for it so I can wear the big boy hunting.........

the 460 is a great gun....crank up your reloading station and reload them for about a third (or less) the cost of store purchased...and you can reload them as you want, when you want

I have a 460 in both barrel lengths the 5" and 8 3/8". I love both of them I have a scope on the longer one to hunt with. I would highly recommend either of the pistols. They are alot of fun to shoot. I highly recommend reloading as it will greatly reduce your costs. I had alaska leather works build me a 120 crossdraw for the 5" gun makes it great to carry. Good luck with your purchase.

What do you plan to do with it? I top out with the 44 mag & for what I do that's enough for me. If I can't do it with a 255 grn hardcast & a max load of win 296 it's time for a rifle, that's how I see it. Nothing wrong with stimulating the economy though.

You are gonna enjoy the .460V a LOT!!!

I got mine last March and as the guys say it is very managable recoil. The ammo is a bit pricey but reloading is the way to go. In fact I like mine so much I got it a big brother, the .460XVR 8 3/8 barrel! These guns are fun to shoot and if you go out at dusk, what a fireball. BUT MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE CYLINDER EXHAUST GAP OR YOU WILL GET A BLOWN OFF PART OF YOUR FINGER. Other than that the are a "BLAST" , I sometimes go to an indoor range and I try to let the person next to me know when I am about to shoot, so he dosen't jump straight up out of his shoes, it also packs a pretty powerful concussion, so make sure everyone is behind you. Make sure you have hearing protection 30db at minimum as these bad boys are LOUD!! So good luck and give us a report when you get one, and let me know where you plan on getting one as I know where they are priced best....Have Fun!!:D

I own a 460 with the 8 3/8" barrel and it is a blast to shoot. I have shot a 500 in both the 5" and 83/8" barrel lengths and the 460 recoil less then the 500. I also like the 460 because, as stated before, it can shoot three different calibers from the same gun. I reload for mine, but I really like shooting the factory Hornady loads through it as well. I have shot it at an indoor range a few times and it draws a crowd. I even had one gentleman move down three stalls because it was too much for him! Enjoy it once you buy it.

I have 2 460's a 5 inch and a snub that comes in the bear kit. They are great guns and I carry the 5 inch on a belt holster when I trail ride on the 4 wheeler and hike and camp with the bear kit.

I owned 5 of the 460 Mags, a 5 inch, 3 of the 8 3/8 inch and a 10 inch performance model. I sold them all, and kept my 500 Mags.

I was thinking the 460 was a great round, but it could never take the place of my 500 Mags. I like the bigger holes of the 500 mag.

If I want a 45 Caliber hole in something, I will use my Ruger in 45 Colt.

Im a pretty small (maybe medium) guy. 5'6" and 160 lbs. Y'all think I can handle the 460V?

Anyone here my size own this gun?

Thanks!

460

i had a 460 12" hunter performance center model that blew up but smith replaced it but had to settle with a 14" barrel which is great. not to hijack the post but until the rep asked if i would take a 14" i didn't even think they made any. she told me they had 2 and if i wanted they would make a gun for me or wait 3 more months for the 12".but all said got it back and shoots great with all rounds. very nice recoil but then its about rifle weight.
