Was such a beast ever made?!?!
I have a buddy that wants to trade me a 629 no dash, P&R, 3", with square butt combats? I'm pretty familiar with the smiths, especially larger calibers, but can't find any reference to this one. Is it a re-barrel, or is it possible one was made? The cylinder is fluted. I appreciate any help. Thanks

If you are certain it is not a 4” barrel, and especially if it has a full lug 3” barrel, it has an altered or later barrel on it. Photos would be interesting in any case.

I'm no S&W revolver history guru but my understanding is that the 629 models came out after P&R guns were out of production.
I'm sure some highly knowledgeable individual will soon chime in and provide the answer w/o equivocation. Don

Back in the day, I had all of the no dash p&r 629’s but never heard of a 3”.

Those look like more modern barrel markings. Also the pinned front sight is suspicious. I would say it had a barrel swap
|

Priced as a rarity or as a shooter? If as a shooter buy it if you want it. As a rarity confirm not a rebarrel. Is it worth the cost of a letter to you to confirm?

Priced at $1300 so either way a little stout, in my opinion, but if it's right and rare enough I'll spring for it. LOL

It has a later (629-5 or -6) barrel, with ".44 Magnum" rollmarked on the left side, and would have had a groove milled into the top of the barrel shank to clear the pin. Cool gun but not $1300 cool to me. Good luck in your decision.

I considered a 3" when I converted my 6" 629-3 sq. butt to a 4" 629-3. Brownells had both in stock last year. 3" requires a shorter ejector rod.

P&R 629s did not last long, a year or so in the late 70s. Four inch was the shortest barrel made until probably the middle .80s.
Somebody rebarreled it and now wants a premium for it. Probably would be a good shooter, but it did not ship from the factory in that configuration.
