Default Picture Test

Just testing resizing in PhotoBucket. The smaller of the two pictures was resized to 800x600. The larger is the original. I was also looking to see if the resizing changed the shapness of the photo. Here goes..

lol...Thanks, It appears the original is sharper than the resized. I think the S&W role mark is clearer but maby tha's because it bigger.

Still sorting things out for the 20th time.(I think i'm close though)

very nice pictures that display the blue finish with little glare. Can you tell us how you shot it?

ctpdco, I placed the gun on a L shaped stand that I made with some wood scraps and white laminated pieces of shelving from Home Depot.

It basically looks like a small white couch(At some point I'll take a picture of it and put it in this thread)

I mounted a large round magnet on it so I can stick the gun in place. However, the magnet would mark up the gun and mess up the picture so I put a piece of really good photo paper(81/2"x11") in between it and the gun.

I placed the gun in indirect sunlight(It was a sunny day about early afternoon facing west) and took the pictures.

As for the camera I used a Sony DSC-F828 at 5 MegPixel. The gun was 24" away from the lens of the camera(This is my Focal legth when not in Macro). After manually framing the picture I then used the Digital Zoom and re-framed it. I put the camera on Auto Focus, Fully closed the Aperture(For Sharpnes), Adjusted the Shutter Speed to correctly balance the Aperture setting(Hardest Part) and set the timer(I also used a Trypod).

Here's another picture, of a different gun, that I think was probably my best so far.

kobsw..... great pictures. See you are using a Sony DSC-F828 camera. The original pic looks like a 1078 x 700 and as you say the reduced one is the 800 x 600. I post my pics on Photobucket as well. Both the above will certainty post here. The original will show better than reducing it. When you reduce the original down to the 800 x 600 it may/may not distort that picture. It depends of the setup for the original. I know the next size up.. the 1280 x 768 is too large for here & you will only get a "link" to your Photobucket page. Do you have software which will automatically adjust the 2nd set of numbers ? If so thats best. But again you did a great job on your pics.

Great pics. Agree that the larger one (of the original two pics) was sharper. I need to work on my photography skills. I never get sharpness and detail like that, even though I am using a 10 Megapixel DSLR. I feel like something is wrong with the camera but more likely with the photographer.

exfebee, Thanks for the comments and yes the originals are 1024x768. As for an App. that would let me adjust sizes, no I don't have one. I presume Photoshop would be a good start.

I would like to adjust the width a bit. What are you using?

deuterij, I know what you mean. My camera can take pictures up to 8 MegPixels and I thought the higher the better. Well yes and no. I found that setting my camera to 5 MegPixels was just about right for 1024x768 pictures.

However, I didn't start taking a correctly exposed and sharp picture until I read my camera's manual.

First, I found out that the front of my lens had to be at a minimum of 24" away from the subject.

Second, I didn't understand that the aperture setting helped to sharpen the image. Opening it all the way provides a narrow focus range(I haven't tried this way yet). While closing it all the way widens the focus range which allows the entire subject to be in focus(This is how I took my pictures).

Third, now you have to correctly set the shutter speed to match the aperture. With my camera I move the shutter speed either higher or lower until the EV(Exposure Value) is ZERO then I know i'm all set.

I also use a tripod and the built-in timer because I can't hold the camera still.

Check your manual out to verify how you adjust these settings and practice until you get your pictures just right.

Hope this helps.

kobsw thats an interesting set up. The meg/pix only are for more details ex: a 10 will give you more than a 5. I can see with the pistol you shot it on 12/28/09, at F-8 and at 1/4th a second in a JPEG Compressed format. Crank the F Stop up around F11-F14 & that will get everything in focus. But you did a real good job on both the S&W revolver & the pistol. I use a software known as "Capture NX-2" which is mostly for Nikon type cameras. A Macro lens will get right up close details, and with some softwares you can doctor the pics up whereas they can be framed & hung on the wall. Photoshop is good and a lot of folks use that. Heres one of my 686-4 Snubby I took last week out in the back yard with the gun sitting on a stool.
I'd be glad to talk camera stuff to you anytime by PM.. e-mail.. etc.
Carl

Having posted pics on the web for many years, I can tell you that if you want maximum sharpness, you should re-size in PS (or whatever) to the size that you want displayed.
