When you do determine how much you want for it, I'm interested. Please contact me when you're ready to sell.

I'll give it a shot. Lets see, 4 inch 617 no dash, very good/excellent condition with no box or documents. I would say $600 or $650

When pricing something I always check the auction sites. From what I've seen, $600-650 depending on condition, more if it has the factory combat grips, even more with box/papers. The no dash's, especially the 4", seem to be the most sought after models.

M617 Price Check
Hey,
In 2005 at the Tulsa Gun Show with 11 acres of competition for my cash. I picked up a M617 (no dash) 4 inch, NIB with all the pwk and tools for $550. I was specifically looking for a M617 and there were not very many (3 or 4) in the 11 acres of firearms.
Make sure and clean it well and take good photos. You might do better than you think.
Regards,
ERB

Saw one for $625 a few months ago in Dallas suburb. As close to 100% condition as possible for a used gun. No box/papers, beautiful and perfect finger groove combat grips.
It's too bad yours doesn't have the original grips. Even so, I would say $550-$600 would be about right. The four inchers seem to be the most popular. It should sell quickly! The perfect companion to the best stainless 357 ever made, the 686. Why would you want to sell it?!

I've personally never had to break the $400 mark for any of my 3 617's but I guess those days are gone forever. I'd think $500-$550 would be fair to both parties.

I have a track on the Plus 4-in Bbl version (10-shot) but the Bluebook only makes this distinction between the 6-shot and the 10-shot: "Add $16 for 4 or 6 in. barrel with 10 shot, or $54 for 8 3/8 in. barrel (disc. 2002)," so $16 is included in my track:
Smith & Wesson 617 Plus Revolver in .22, Long Rifle 4-in Bbl. Bluebook of Gun Values (30th Edition) indicates between $476 in 98% condition and $631 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 31 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $650 over a period of 6 Yrs 1 Mos ending October 31, 2009. The average price as of that date was $485. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights, adjusted to two magazines (if magazine fed), all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $940.
The trend price at the end of the measurement period is about $560. Good examples—box, tools, & papers—would be more, other examples might be less. Lock/No lock, MIM/No MIM, Aluminum Cylinder/Steel Cylinder, etc. would be a matter of taste and dickering.

Thanks for all the responses. To be honest it just sits in the back of the safe and I don't shoot it. In addition I just bought my first house so the money could really be used better elsewhere.

Unless you just hate revolvers or something, KEEP this gun! It is the best production 22 revolver that has been made in many years. You just can't replace it with ANY gun being made today - including new production 617s with the zit.

Well, I've decided to just work a little overtime and keep her. Thanks for all the help.

A good decision, think of it as money in the bank that you can take out and enjoy using too.

Been There-Done That. Don't ever sell a gun to finance anything around the house. A house is a bottomless money pit and an never ending drain on finances. The carpet, appliance, or furniture you buy will be worthless in 3 years and junk in 5. A S&W revolver gains value all the time like $ in the bank. ( Especially those safe queens!)

WOW! Interesting graph. What else do you have a track on? Got one on a 2" 317? Is this just something you did in Excel in your spare time? or is this some software you've acquired or work with?

Thanks, bubbajoe45. I have tracks on some other S&W's, a couple Rugers, a couple HKs, all are guns I own, used to own, or lust after.
The spare time aspect is collecting data from various sources, local gun stores, online auctions, classifieds, and forums. The data are stored in a FileMaker database of my own construction and the charts are made using Pivot Tables in Excel files generated by exporting price data from the FileMaker file.
Screen shots posted in a new thread in The Lounge: Firearms Inventory.
