I like to think I know a bit about M29s. I've had them in 8 3/8, 6 1/2 and 6 inch barrels. Callahan uses a 6 1/2" in every movie but the last one, when a 6'' was used. He lost his gun in the bomb at the end of Magnum Force, and when it was kicked into the ocean near the end of Sudden Impact. By '88, when The Dead Pool came out S&W no longer made the 29 in 6 1/2'' so Harry took one with a 6''. All blue steel and all 6 1/2" till the last flick. And I'm tired of pointing this out...

I don't remember that...why would ANYONE choose to load a M-29 with ammo producing 350 lb-ft versus 900+ lb-ft?

Dont' even pretend to say "recoil" and all that reduced loads BS....in the MOVIE, Dirty Harry was all about the Magnum load!

As big a fan of DH as I am, I have to chuckle at the sound track when he shot those light loads.

They were ALWAYS magnums on the sound track.

Now that is one creepy woman and one scary movie....I still get upset just thinking about her and that knife. Saw it on the big screen in a dark theater on a date with my girl . She didn't like the movie either. Been married 41 years now!
Some times when she's in the kitchen , cutting up something for dinner I'll ask her if she wants me to "play misty for her" she gives me "The Look" .

For your info, the DH M29s were from a prop house in Hollywood by the name of Ellis Mercantile, I know cause that's where I started my TA business in the 80s.

The 29s were 6 1/2", I shot them.

Since the 1950s the blank used is called a 5in1.

It fits the 44 mag, 44 special, 45 Colt, 44-40 and 38-40 (maybe he confused this round although a 38-40 is actually close to 40 caliber..)

It wasn't till the mid 90s that more individual blanks were made, in fact 5in1s are still used, alot.

Used them two weeks ago on "BONES".

No one asked but I watched Dirty Harry on my VCR and counted the number of rounds in the opening sequence. Four.

Watch it again.
The first two shots are obvious. Then you hear, but do not see him fire at the car as it starts to drive away/towards him, shot #3. Then you see him shoot, two times at the car, #'s 4 and 5. Finally, when the car is on its side, the last bad guy out of the bank gets round #6.
Then again, the bad guy jumping out of the car, once it is on it's side, gets off a shot too. That actually adds to the confusion.
I just dug out, and watched this movie (again) the day before this thread started, a classic.
I did the round count thing too.

Pause the DVD at 14:02 to 14:03. Advance 1 frame at a time.
At 14:04, the pin is extremely obvious. It shows up easily again at 14:32

Oh, and lets not forget what this movie is really all about...Hot Mary

I argued this with my buddy he has a 8 3/8" barreled m29 that he swears was used in the movie. I say it was a 6 1/2" barrel.

Now I'm thinking possibly when he has the bad guy on the ground with the barrel in his face the camera shot is up the barrel. Could this be a 8 3/8" barrel making it just look bigger. The 45 caliber did cross my mind for the appearence of a bigger bore. Of course if it wasn't done, like you guys say is correct did they have some sort of photo shop in those days? I swear in some shots the barrel looks longer than 6 1/2"?

Lens to subject distance has a big influence on the relative sizes of things in the image. The classic example is a straight on portrait taken close up - noses get huge and ears get tiny, and the closer the camera was the bigger the nose seems. Because we all know intutitively the relative sizes of ears and noses, the close up shot with the (relatively) big nose also makes the whole head seem like it's really "deep."

Same thing will happen with a gun barrel pointed at the lens - the closer it is to the lens, the bigger the muzzle will look, AND the (relatively) smaller cylinder will make it feel like the barrel must be a really long one.

Do you remember if the badge is inlaid into the grip or just screwed on top? My friend had a replica made and isn't convinced it's inlaid into the wood.

A S&W M57 in .41 magnum was actually used in the first DH movie if I recall correctly.

This will be the myth that never dies. My head hurts, believe whatever.

I got the DVD from the county library and watched that part again. Six it is.

Some day this forum will put up a "sticky" on the Dirty Harry "magnum" and straighten out all the misinformation ... then again that would only be effective if folks were to read it.

Oh well.....

I cannot believe that you can belong to the S&W Forum and not have all the Dirty Harry films on DVD! For that matter Clint Eastwood DVD's in general, I have an entire shelf just for his DVDs!

Frank Sinatra was originally envisioned in the role of Harry Callahan, but he couldn't wield the M-29 due to an old wrist injury.

Supposedly, the lead was then offered to John Wayne, who declined to take on a Sinatra reject.

Now Dirty Harry is unquestionably Clint's character, but I have this mental of The Duke or Blue Eyes delivering the line "Well do ya, punk?", and it's pretty dang powerful.

I've compared the two "True Grit" versions and think the re-make is better made and better-acted, especially the role of LaBoeuf. But for entertainment, the raw strength of The Duke in the original does it for me.

I was lucky and ran into John Milius, who wrote "Dirty Harry". We were in the Colt booth at the NRA Show in Reno some years back. I asked him about Sinatra's connection to "Dirty Harry".

Milius related that he had been called up and asked to meet with Frank who wanted to see "the gat". Frank had just had some surgery to his right hand and the scars were evident. Milius showed Frank the Model 29, and Sinatra looked it over without much comment. By the time Milius got home Frank had withdrawn from the project. Shortly thereafter Clint Eastwood was hired.

I regret not asking Milius what barrel length pistol he showed Frank. It is my understanding that Harry was originally supposed to carry a 4 inch revolver.

Yes, I have failed once again. I do have access to two county library systems and Netflix, however, so I can watch Clint anytime I like. I also have a 19, 36, 63, 66 and an M&P 15 (and used to have a 29) so I feel that allows me to partake of the Forum, as if one really needs a reason. FWIW, I like "Joe Kidd" and "High Plains Drifter" for his location use of the Eastern Sierras.

Been there, done that. I went from 6' 2 3/4" at age 25, down to 5' 11 1/2" at age 69. Time can be very unfriendly to those of us who are well-stricken in years.

I never knew that one of the Colt Walker replicas in "Josie Wales" was the same revolver that Kim Darby used in "True Grit", though. Interesting.

From what I have read numerous times over the years is that an 8-3/8" M29 was used only for promotional posters and ads.
Harry Callahan never used anything but a 6-1/2" M29 like mine.

I read somewhere that he actually used a model 15 in 45 Colt.

Guys, those were movies... it does not matter.

Having seen that gun every day for the past year and a half, I can assure you that it is indeed a Model 29, the barrel is pinned, and it still chambers a .44 Mag round with no problem.

They were going to use a Glock 17 at first, but there were two problems.
It hadn't been produced yet.
And it caused problems with a line that they really wanted to use.

But being this is a 9 mm, the most common handgun in the world and would likely penetrate your skull, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?"

Nope. You're the wrong one. He always used the 6-1/2".

Go back and look at the several still pictures from both movies ,you will be able to see its a 6 inch.Or better yet post them here so that others may confirm that for you.Not withstanding the special one cut to .45 bore for dramatic muzzle effect in the coffee shop scene in Sudden Impact.
