GUN POWDER FOULING IN NEW GUN

I bought a 686 plus 3" TALO from an internet dealer and had it shipped to local gun shop. Due to background check I waited 21 days and just picked it up last night.

Upon getting home I removed the grips and started to clean the "NIB" revolver and noticed gunpowder fouling in the barrel and cylinders.

The gun was shipped with spent shell casing (Maryland law); could this gunpowder be from test firing & spent shell casing firing?

I bought a 642 a few years ago and a Beretta Nano this spring, both had spent shell casings and neither had gunpowder fouling. All my other guns I bought used.

Someone from the LGS might have tried it out while it was in their possession during the 21 days but I highly doubt it.

Anyone else experience this with a factory new gun?

All guns are supposed to be test fired at the factory. It's common to see firing residue on every other cylinder on "unfired" guns. Congrats on your new 686!

Thanks, I realize all new guns are test fired, I just thought S&W would do a thorough cleaning afterwards.

I recently purchased a NIB 686 3 inch TALO and had the same concern. S&W does not clean their guns after test firing. One way to tell for sure is to look at the area where the extractor rod meets the cylinder. I just fired 100 rounds of 38's thru my 686 and this area is difficult to get perfectly clean.

Not if you unscrew the extractor rod and strip the cylinder down. You can buy an inexpensive tool to remove the rod without marring it from MidwayUSA, among other places. I strip my guns' cylinders every time I clean them.

I don't think that any of the manufacturers clean their guns after test firing them. By not cleaning them it provides proof that the gun was actually test fired.
