What is a 629-5 Mountain Backpacker worth?
May be selling this locally. What is a fair price? Thanks

I had one of these a while back, like NIB w/ all. They only made 200.
My dealer has it now, and has $895 on it, but he's known for being a bit high. Hope that helps.

I have a 629-4 Backpacker I paid $600 in January 2004. My guess is that it would probably sell for $100-$200 more now. I live in California and pre-lock S&W's seem to sell for a premium here.

If this is true, why aren't more people looking for them?

Don't know rollin'. Maybe there are so many "limited" runs of these short barrel .44's that it's hard to tell the rare from the not so rare. These Mountain Backpackers are actually numbered by the serial number, i.e. MBP 123, etc. So the serial numbers are custom too!

Man, I'd have a hard time parting with that one.
I probably wouldn't sell either of these for less than $800 and there were far more of each of these runs than yours.
Prices are only going to go up and honestly they are a hoot to shoot!

What a old thread and I was quite surprised to see another one of these..I bet you are glad you kept it now..They have really gone up in value and yes there were only 200 of these ever produced..Mine is unfired and is a mid two digit production number.I collect the shorter bbl's Lew Horton's and so on..Last pic is of a 629 that I also love to death..

One of which one?The 629-3 or the Mountain Backpacker?I would not part with my Mountain Backpacker for that considering they are fetching 900.00 in fired but excellent condition..With the box and never fired like mine is they are selling for over 1200.00 I did however see one go for just over 900.00 on GB..The buyer I am sure was happy..

Mountain Packer
Just picked up on this thread. I was looking for a value on them but didn't get much of a response so I bought one [629-5] last night without knowing the going rate.
I am curious though, since this one has the laser etched bear on the inspection plate and is MagNaPorted. Do all "Mountain Packers" with the 3 inch have the bear?
Any thoughts on value?

No , not all have the bear. Value is what it is worth to you, but I would ballpark it at $700-$800 as a buyer. Several have been listed on GB with only a few selling in this range.
