Souirce of Flag to replace Internal Lock Component
What is the source of the replacememt flag one can purchase to replace the dreaded lock component in the new S&W's? I have not had a lock failure in any of my competion gunms which have gone through several thousand rounds each. However for my carry piece I believe it would be prudent to have one less thing to go amiss.

TSQUARED:
The flag can be removed. You don't need to replace it with anything. Or, you can grind the nub off the flag and leave the flag in there.
If you want to do it right, the round "keyhole" piece can be removed and replaced with a plug. Forum member 'Bullseye Smith' has lock plugs for sale in the Misc. section of the Classifieds here. I have one installed in my 686 and another coming for my 640. It is an elegant and creative solution to making the frame whole again (yes, pun intended).
If you search in the 1980-to-Present and/or Lounge forums and use the word "plug", you will find a few threads that have pictures of plugged S&W's.
edit Here you go: The "Plug" for a S&W J-Frame end of edit
HTH,
Chris

S&W sells them. When you call, just give them the part #.
I have a bunch of good ones and "broken" ones for J-frames.

I would like to purchse an extra flag so that I can grind of the tab and replace the factory unit in my carry piece. Not concerned about plugging the key hole since I am only concerned about reliabilty.

The part is the Lock Arm, 293740000. Costs $4.12. Only problem is S&W won't sell it to you. They did at one time, and I bought a few, but the part is officially for factory installation only. You could try calling them and order a couple. Maybe they'll be in a good mood, and help you out.

Call at the very end of the day (like 7:30 PM Eastern time) and just give them the part #. I have bought about 10 of them at different times. You should also get the little spring that goes with it.

Tell the truth, they've never told me "no", but others have reported a negative from them. As allglock suggests, I've just given them the part number and they've shipped, no sweat. If a certain lady answers and is uncooperative, try again when you can talk with the guy. It's the way to go. Each of my IL revolvers has a modified flag, with a stock one ready to install. When I sell the gun, or send it to S&W, I return the lock to full function. Leave the locking cam mechanism in place. It's retained by the hammer, so it can't jam the gun. No need for a plug, or an empty hole.

I am bringing up this older post to try to find a part, not the flag but the lock cam. I lost mine somehow and have been trying to find one.
Anyone know the part number? I doubt S&W will send me one but it is worth a try, especially if I have a part number.
Thanks

There is a documented case, on this board, two in fact, where the IL safety parts themselves became loose inside the gun and jammed the mechanism. Just grinding off the nub on the flag leaves the four little parts in there, still able to jam the gun. If you have the gun apart anyway, just take them all out, and be done with it. Keep them in a film can, for re-installation later. Putting cosmetic plugs back into the holes, with small parts inside to retain them, only replaces the removed parts with different little parts, to come loose. Remove all the parts, and Ignore the little holes. Your revolver is full of holes.
There is a hole in the front end where the bullet squirts out. There are several holes in the front of the cylinder, a hole behind the trigger, and a gap between the top, front, and rear of the cylinder. Why let a little hole that says "L" for "lubricate" bother you.

Totally disagree.... With the nub ground off, there are no lock parts that can jam the action.
If you take everything out, you have the risk of getting all kinds of **** inside the gun.

You can totally disagree with the owner who had it happen. The lock parts got dislogded and jammed the gun. The posts are in this gun-board, and were read by hundreds, but if you want to call the member who posted it a liar, that's on you.
What kind of all kinds of **** will go into a tiny hole that won't go into all the other holes mentioned ?
Where do you keep your gun so that all kinds of **** will get into it anyway ?

I discontinued giving credence to lock problem reports long ago. Most clearly don't involve the lock at all. A number of the rest are retracted at some (much) later date. The lock components are kept in place by the lock mechanism itself, and by the hammer. The only time any of the parts could become dislodged is when the hammer is fully cocked. I suppose that if you cocked the hammer and beat on the side of the gun with a heavy, solid object you might be able to move the cam and it's spring, but it wouldn't be easy. I'm not saying stuff doesn't happen, but we're talking ridiculously long odds. I'd worry more about the cylinder stop self-destructing, or the firing pin breaking, or the hammer stud failing, or the cylinder jamming on debris, or any of a long list of malfunctions that are a lot more likely than dislodged lock parts.
