I have seen it described on several sites as collectible and on a couple of auction sites this model has been selling at a high price. Can you folks tell me if it is indeed collectible? I have only shot it 3 times, it was just something I had to have when I began reading about the HMR17 cartridge some years ago and its like new condition.

Seem the value of this model has gone up. care to offer any ideas on it's value?

Total production was about 3200 IIRC and a few (500) models were PC guns. I had one couple years ago, I could not hit the broad side of a barn with gun and come to find out I was not the only one that had problems with accuracy. I also hated cleaning all those little holes in the cylinder.

As value goes they seem to be doing well, both regular and PC model. But never can tell as how it will be in couple years, might be worth what you paid, or might be worth 10 times what you paid. If I had to keep and use the gun it would about the last choice of gun S&W made or makes I would buy.

My guess with the barrel/cylinder gap of revolver and the short barrels 8" and 10" IIRC the round would loose probably 30% to 40% of advertised velocity because the HMR & WMR ammo uses slower burning rifle powder. I know that the B/C and short barrel of revolvers do this from testing with a model 48 and a Dan Wesson 722 WMR with a Chrony of a friends. It had such an effect on me I traded a very nice M48 for a NIB 2206, still have the DW as it's more of a collector item and lot more accurate then the S&W M-48, I did however take the WMR cylinder out and pack it up. The HMR & WMR in a revolver are worthless is my conclusion. But to each their own.

I had one for about a year; just sold/traded it to a forum member here, actually. Accurate and fun to shoot, but I prefer small game hunting with a rifle instead and it's a bit pricey to shoot as a range toy.

Prices on the auctions have definitely been trending up, but make sure you're looking at actual completed auctions, not just the pipe-dream asking price of some dealers.

I had one of the 8-3/8" M647s and still have my twelve-inch PC M647-1. My M647, like many others, patterned rather than grouped. The M647-1 is quite the shooter, and I have been able to shoot 50 yard groups that were under 0.5-inch from a rest.

I also had one...loud and never shot as accurate as any of my 22's. I can shoot a box of reloads in a "real" gun with accuracy for half of what the HMR ammo costs. Dumped mine at a local shop and I think it laid around there over a year before it finally left.

I must have gotten a good one, its one of the most accurate revolvers I own, It shoots under an inch at 50 yds from a rest on a regular basis.

A Smith that appeals to a niche market.
To my mind,I'm not a fan of a round that does so much better in rifle configuration,and to that I'll add the 22 magnum.

Mine will shoot dime sized groups all day long a 25 yards. I wouldn't be surprised if a better shooter could do even better with it!
