Its my favorite!! I have a 629-2 on its way for the same treatment. My goal is to have two "heirloom" guns for both my kids when they grow up. I want the guns to be similar but each unique just like my kids. I will post pics when she is done. Thanks again WC!

Default My only Magnaport...

A lightly modified 629PP. Trigger job, velvet hone and pinstripe..They do great work. I did this many years ago, but recall that I was concerned about the velvet hone glass beads removing the model#/caliber laser etching on the barrel and frame. They took great care to go over those areas lighter so that the etching is intact.

Since I am sure there are a few regular gun rag readers on this board, I really took this idea from a nice article that Layne Simpson did for Shooting times around the 1996 time frame. In this article (which was really an infomercial for MagnaPort), he showcased two S&W revolvers customized by MP. The first was a 6" 629 and the second was a companion 6" 617. Both guns had similar treatments to mine with the addition to the magnaports. I cannot recall if the 22LR 617 had them as well? If I ever find that magazine (i know I saved it), i will scan and share here.

Default All my revolvers are customized by Magnaport!

In the thumbnail pics here is my .44 special S&W M696 3" barreled L-Frame (36 oz, stainless, CCW, Field carry gun). I had Magnaport do the dual trap magnaporting, jewel polish the trigger and hammer, an action job, and a Hi-Viz sight installed. This gun is amazing as shooting anything from nominal 180 grain Hornady XTP loads to full house Keith style Buffalo bore loads (255 grain hard cast Keith---984 fps/548 ft-lbs out a 3.25 inch S&W 396) is absolute cake! Even one handed. The velocity loss is insignificant as there is more nominal variation between rounds of ammo in the same box than any velocity loss as a result of the magnaporting. Nice 44 magnum rollin_hot! I have a 629 classic in a 5" that has the same treatment as my 696 pictured here.

Here's a couple they did for me back in 89 or 90.

First up is a 629-2 that started out as an 8 3/8" gun.

current configuration

Here's a 29-3 Classic Hunter they hard chromed and, well... did other thing to.

627-0

I can shoot a 170g cast SWC with an obscene amount of W296 under it in this 627 w/o any of that pesky recoil, feels like a 38Spl.

Just recently picked up a Charter Arms/Mag-na-port "Backpacker" Bulldog, #128 of 250. Great little gun, slick action, handles well, the porting really tames the recoil. It's pretty much in as new condition (the hard chrome finish has held up very well), even came with the original "Mag-na-port" embossed leather gun rug.
*New pics with a set of Charter Arms new boot grips, not so good for recoil but much better for concealment (they also weigh2.5oz less than the Pachmayrs). This is a terrific carry and back up gun.

It's amazing how small it is, barely bigger than a j-frame-

I also picked up this Mag-na-port custom M29. It started life as a "Bounty Hunter" but has been worked over - ports, action, muzzle crown, etc, etc - also it has a K/L round butt grip frame, don't know if it came from the factory that way or if Mag-na-port did it. It's a great shooting gun but the green "gun kote" finsh is horrible. I'm not sure what I'm going to refinish it in but the green is going to go.
* New pics of this one, too. The grips are old beater Jay Scotts that are going to get some reshaping and be refinished darker. Still love the way the gun shoots, handles, and carries but the green is not growing on me. I've decided that's going to get a treatment similar to my 586 L-Comp - cylinder cut for moonclips, front edge of the cylinder beveled, the whole gun bead blasted clean and then parkerized. I'll top it off with C&S Extreme Duty fixed rear sight and a brass bead front. Then it'll be good to go and I won't be embarrassed to be seen carrying it.

The first time I ever shot my 1989 4" Mountain Revolver with full house rounds
I thought to myself "this gun is a candidate for MagNaPorting". It ended
up pointing straight up to the sky. It came with rubber grips but they
were very hard at the thumb web area.

It took 20 years but I finally got courage and sent my baby off to
MagNaPort (a couple of weeks after Larry passed away). Their customer
service is unparalleled. The gunsmith actually called me at home to
discuss the details and make sure I got what I wanted (including
a couple of things he suggested). Shirley made the call worthwhile for
both of us

What I got was an action job (includes a bunch of stuff), radius
and polish the trigger for double action and HiViz sights. I got a green
ramp as well in case I decided to change my mind later. S&W later
lost that sight butt that's another story.

I added the S&W 500 Mag grips. I have to say this made a huge
difference as the ports cause the gun to go backwards instead of
rise up. The gun now shoots comfortably as well as my heavier
44's (6" 629, 7.5" Redhawk).

As I said in another thread:
"I put the 500 grips on my 1989 Mountain Revolver and the
shooting experience with full loads went from dreary to fun!
They are not lookers. Don't even fit completely right but they
do the job. Probably never going to put others on that gun."

The action job is fantastic. I have never enjoyed as smooth a
double action as this. This might be important as this is an anti-bear
weapon in Northern Wisconsin. I have been practicing with full
rounds and the MagNaPort has allowed me to at least double my
recovery and second shot speed.

I always add a piece of rubber on the trigger to minimize over-travel.
Try it. You will like it.

You may have one of the only puke green 29s in existence. You
might want to think twice about destroying an example of what not
to do. <D/R>

I recently had Mag-Na-Port convert an older Charter Arms Bull Dog .44 special to a "Backpacker".

The horror will live on in pics but I don't want to be "that guy" with the mold green .44mag forever. It's definitely getting refinished.

Not sure I'd have the heart to modify the great looking classic hunter like that, but the results are nothing short of amazing. Beautiful gun!

If it makes you feel better, mine were all not in the best shape and pretty good candidates for the custom work.

Both guns had similar treatments to mine with the addition to the magnaports. I cannot recall if the 22LR 617 had them as well? If I ever find that magazine (i know I saved it), i will scan and share here.
I found a picture used for that article below...this is a 617 & 629.

I have a gun mag coming from the early 90's that had an article about Magnaports Combat Mini in it. I will post when it arrives.

I'm a little late to this party but I wanted to mention that this 4" Magnaported 629 was the only .44 magnum that I kept when I sold off a large part of my gun collection about eight years ago. The reason that I kept this particular .44 was that it out shot all of the other .44s that I had including ones with longer barrels. When I bought this gun (used) it would misfire almost every round. It turned out that the previous owner had tried to lighten the trigger pull by bending the main spring. I put in a new mainspring and have not had a single problem since then.

Yep Yep. 4" 44's are the shiz.

Looks like a very early 629. P&R.
Not too many of those out there with ports.
Beautiful gun!
