Default M&P 360 Revolver-Chiefs Special-J frame

Well, I think I'm getting nostalgic. A few years ago I would have never considered buying another revolver. Now I'm thinking of buying two. Thinking about getting this J frame for my hot summer carry. My Glock 26 is just too big, especially when going to the gym and running. I think it would make a great companion to the 386NG that I'm also planning on getting for colder weather carry. Anyone own own or shot one? I carried a Model 36 Chiefs Special twenty years ago as a backup and off duty before transitioning to Glocks. Having a hammer (SA option) is a must for me (just in case).

Thanks

The only thing "wrong" with that gun is the front sight wont fit some holsters.

I own both a 340PD and a 360SS. Hammerless 340 is the way to go for pocket carry if DAO does not bother you. I get alot of pocket lint in the 360 but the option of having single action helps in practice and getting the recoil under control. Avoid the PD titanium cylinders get the stainless, less potential problems and easier to clean. The only downside to these revolvers is the fact that alot of types of ammo jump crimp and walk out on you. I havent had a problem with Hornady for my carry ammo. but cheaper practice rounds are sometimes a problem. On any ammo you use in these you will have to test by shooting 4 rounds and checking the 5th to see if the bullet is pulling. they are a quirky little handful that are made to carry alot and shoot less than others, but they still have a place in the lineup with me. Hope this helps. Dale.

I have a mod. 60 and a 360 PD, which is slightly lighter than the M&P. These light-weights are brutal with .357 loads, but as far as carrying, you hardly know it's there. I carry in a Mitch Rosen pocket holster. Carry with the 60, you know it's there. the 360, not so much.

Speer makes a short barrel .357 load that isn't quite so painful, less recoil and muzzle flash. Practice with .38s and you'll probably never realize the recoil if you ever have to use it in a real-life situation.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty much decided on the MP 360. I'll let you all know how it turns out along with the 386NG. My wife is going to kill me when she sees the CC bill :-))).

You're gonna love it! I have a M&P 340 that I carry every day, no matter what I wear, it's invisible and weightless. I've put 1000 rounds through mine in the past 3 months. This snubby's accuracy amazes me.

Retired from NYPD after 20 ( wifey also ) and been a cop here in FL for 8 yrs. Always carry a Glock 27. Bought 2, 340 PD's One for me, one for her, now on the job down here. Both were light, both were easy to carry. Finish on both started going south after about a month of carry. Point of Aim was off on both. We were told by S&W Barrels were too tightly torqued. Shooting 357's for practice as gun was purchased with intent to use 357 was not much fun. Bottom line we went back to off duty Glock 27's and never looked back. For us, the 340PD was a waste of cash/time/enjoyment.
Good Luck

S&W also makes a 360 in .38 Special only. There is another thread in here about those that I and others have posted our experiences on. In my opinion, .38 Special is plenty in a little lightweight like this. With all the advancements in the caliber these days, the gun is actually very viable.

Default Take a look at a 442 or 642

I just traded my M&P360 for a 642. Here's why. I thought that I had to have 357 power in a snub to get any decent ballistics. The Speer technical rep I talked to suggested that I look into the 38+P short barrel round because I would get much quicker follow up shots. The gel data on the Speer site is very impressive. 11 inches or more through all the barriers except for dry wall. I'll never shoot through drywall, so I'm in good shape with their 38+P round. Also, this particular round has done well on the street for both the NYPD and the LAPD. I had a difficult time shooting even the Speer short barrel 357 round from my M&P360. I must be recoil sensitive. With the 38+P round out of my 15 oz airweight it's just plain fun to shoot. Also, I don't even notice the extra 1.7 oz in my pocket with my 642. Pants don't sag at all. One more note. I thought it was no big deal to place my thumb over the hammer and draw from my pocket. When I switched to the centennial version of the J frame, I couldn't believe how much easier it was to draw from my pocket. I could have stuck with the M&P360, and just switched to the 38+P rounds. I wanted a 38 J frame. It's a very old cartridge. Most popular round in the world according to Wikipedia, and my Dad's favorite round. I am going to inherit his old K frame 38 as well. Make your own choice, but I am pretty pashionate about my 38+P revolver. I don't miss the M&P at all.
