I have a 617 6" and 4" 10 round and have a chance to get a NIB 6 round 6" for a really good price. Except for the 4 extra rounds are they basically the same exact gun? I am pondering if I should get it to add to my collection as I already have both 10 round models of the 617. Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks,

The internal differences between the 10-round and the 6-round are the extractor (10 'teeth' on the ratchet) and the hand which touches the teeth on the ratchet and connects the trigger to the cylinder. There are 4 more chambers and 4 more stop notches on the cylinder.

Other than that, and barring any other differences such as MIM vs. Forged hammer/trigger or differences in the frame, that's about it, internally.

I think I will add it to my collection then, as then I will have the complete set of all three!

I think some (all?) of the 10-round cylinders are aluminum alloy.

Only early versions were alloy.
One nice feature of the six inch/six shot gun is that it probably has both the TT and the TH,which your others may not.

Main difference structurally is that the 10 shot cylinder has more holes.

Target hammer and target trigger.(which are wider)
Your four incher has a standard hammer and trigger-your six inch ten shot may have a standard or target version of each.
I prefer target features.(and yes, I have a six inch six shot...like my ten shot four incher too!

I kind of had the feeling I should get it and now it is a sure deal!Thanks for your imput, can't beat these 617's, now I will have all three models. I have over 10,000 rounds of different brands of .22 ammo, now I can start burning up a few and not cost myself a fortune doing it, and have a lot of fun with my grand kids. Great gun to start them out on for sure.

I would think that the 6-shot cylinder would be stronger, not that it would ever matter with 22LR loads. I have heard people debate whether the 686+ (7 round) cylinders would have problems with really hot .357 loads. I suspect the answer is no there too.

I would get the 6" 6 shot 617 if its in your budget and you just want it.
I own a 6" 10 shot and love it! I shoot it alot and work with it in double action mode 99% of the time. The cylinder is made of stainless steel. S&W made the earliest models with aluminum alloy cylinders but this was discontinued. You will have to check some of the better references as to the date involved. I also own a 648 with a 6" barrel and they are almost identical looking. I love it too! both are great shooters.

Wow, I had no idea prices have gotten that crazy. They seem to be leveling off from the madness after O was elected, but obviously not on some models.
No doubt the rise in ammo prices has drawn more buyers to rimfires, but that's still ridiculous for a 617.
I found one LNIB w/combats about a year & 1/2 ago (maybe a bit more) for a very reasonable price. Now I'm really glad I grabbed it.
