I like the idea of no lock. I don't like the idea, or see the point in, a 3" 23oz pocket revolver.

I want to see one too - actually, I want to see the 632 Pro in 327 Mag.

I'm not sure why, but S&W seems to announce stuff, and it doesn't show up in the stores for a LONG time.

Do you think they will actually ship with the ejector shroud hanging down from the frame like that? Has S&W ever produced a revolver with that sort of "overhang"? It looks like an afterthought.

I don't know - that's why I want to see one in my own hands first.

If I had some free time this weekend, I'd take the 5 hour drive to Charlotte NC to go see the NRA Convention - S&W will be there, and probably have one of everything. (but I don't have the free time)

Take care,

That's funny, I never thought of my 640 as a pocket revolver. IWB, OWB, or maybe in a Jacket pocket of a winter coat but never in my britches pocket. I know some people carry all steel revolvers in their pockets but if I was going to pocket carry it would be a 442 or an old 37 with the hammer bobbed or something along those lines.
I have often wished my 640-1 was a 3 inch and it looks like someone in Massachusetts is going to make my wish come true. Nice.
I really kind of think 3 inch guns are perfect but I know not everyone shares that opinion.
A gun shop owner told me that 3 inch revolvers are for guys that can't make up their mind. Not true.I make up my mind to buy every 3 incher I can. Its the easiest decision there is.

I agree as I felt the same way. The fit-up looks terrible and would require some serious melding to dress it out. Still, I would like to see one in the raw and compare the cylinder cut to my 640 TK version. BTW: I didn’t think it was ‘lock free’ and the Smiths’ store site is currently closed. I’m almost positive it has the lock, as I reviewed the site several times.

No lock, sights look fine, the shroud looks like an afterthought and the MSRP is quite high. Guess we need to see one in the flesh.

No lock? Unfortunately, many of the prototype pics on the Smith & Wesson website in the past have shown no lock but the production gun end up with one.

This one is for sure is being produced with out the lock. Heard it from the S&W Rep. I didn't notice the barrel shroud looking like that. I do hope production guns come out with out that. It is cut for moon clips gents!! Another big plus for me. Nights sights will have to go. I am kind of surprised the MSRP is not higher. Then again it won't sell for that as we all know.

Maybe S&W is starting to listen to the public and their not wanting a lock. It will save them money too.
I can not believe they will release it with that poor fit between the barrel and the frame.
Now if they would make a 329 and a 340 with no lock ...

Question

Has anyone seen one of these yet? It seems like everything else from the shot show has been released but this.

I still have one on order. The word from one of the main distributes that my shop orders from is the rest of the new for 2010 guns won't ship till the end of the year. My guess is that they wanted to get the Bodyguard line out before much of any thing else. The 40PD and 9PD as well as the Pro Series compact 1911 are the only others I have seen out yet.

E-mail contact with S&W on these and a phone-call and two different responses. So, I doubt the left-hand knows what the right-hand is doing. I will not hold my breath until I see one in the local shops.

Still waiting for one of these J Frame dynamos. It's got all the "want-tos" I could ask for on a J carry piece.

I have one on order because of the night sights - a big plus in my book.

I have been shooting over 40 yrs. I started in Law Enforcement
"in the good old days" when 6 shot revolvers were all we had. I
bought a 640 pro and after shooting it, decided it was the best
"out of the box revolver I ever owned. I live in the South where it is hot about 9 months out of 12. I will be carrying this gun in a pocket holster as it is too hot to wear a cover garment. I agree with an earlier comment that it is Not a tack driver but at close
distance 10 yards or less it will surely get the job done. I shot
about 75 rds mixed bag of brands both 38 and 357. While you
can definitely tell the difference the 357's are tolerable. Having lost count many years ago of the number of S&W revolvers I
have owned I would say they got it right with this one. If you feel comfortable carrying a revolver you won't find any better.
I know they are hard to find and are somewhat costly, but I feel you will get your money's worth

I agree with Donzilla. I have the 640 Pro, and I put some Ahrend tactical grips on it (the stock grips are fine, though). I carry it OWB in a Galco concealable belt holster. For me it is a bit heavy for a pocket gun, but I have a 642 if I ever need one in the pocket. The raised sights on this gun also make for quick acquisition. By far my favorite j-frame.

The only real difference I see between this "new Pro" and the old 640-1 is the sights. What else is updated?

I shot my new 640 Pro today after minor trigger work. At an indoor range using 38 158grain H.P. at a distance of about 8
yrds I had 7makeone ragged hole and other 3 within just over 1 "
better than needed for its intended purpose, self defense. This gun likes heavier grain ammo rather than lighter stuff ,especially in 38

Dove tail night sights and cylinder cut for moon clips. I put the Apex trigger kit in mine and carry IWB. Its a great j-frame.

Except for the six chambers - and barrel - for the .327 Federal Magnum, and sporting some S&W Accessories '60 Pro' grips, my 632 Pro looks just like the 640 Pro:

Someone has to have a 640 Pro picture to post... with the OEM grips...

I have the 632 Pro and really like the look and feel. The 327 Magnum is also a cool little round. I plan on eventually picking up a 640 Pro too.

My primary carry gun is a 340 (no lock) and other than the difference in weight, I actually really prefer the longer barrel and night sights on the 632.

FWIW, I did have an initial issue with Q/C. LGS special ordered the 632 and the first one had a canted barrel. So did the second. The third gun was fine and has performed flawlessly. As with any gun purchase, give it a good inspection before you take it home.

I love mine.
I was skeptical when I heard the initial complaints about trigger pull.
I don't buy that.
It's not a glass trigger but it's a carry gun and easy enough to pull accurately once shot regularly.
I replaced the rubbers with some Talo wood.

Is there a 640 Pro model that's .38 Special only?

A friend of mine had some major issues with his 342 so S&W told him to send it in. They called him back and said it was unrepairable and offered him a 640 Pro without a lock and cut for moon clips as a replacement - my friend stated a replacement was acceptable but it had to be .38 only. He swears the rep told him there are two models - a .38/.357 and a .38 only and my friend claims he chose the latter option. I haven't been able to find a pic of such an animal.

Is the rep misinformed or does such an item exist? Pics please if it does.
