Will S&W refinish a revolver
I have a chance at a very old and beat up Hwy patrolman. It needs to be reblued. Will S&W reblue the gun?

I saw on their site the other day that they have those services available. You may get it done cheaper locally, but I would send it to S&W too!

Yes they will. I know others can tell you the cost, I can't recall off the top of my head. They will not re-blue it to its original finish. It will be the mate finished but a bit darker then the original HP finish was. Also the logo stamped on the side plate may be buffed out and they will have to re-stamp it on the frame side.

The factory website used to quote refinishing prices - I think it was $275 for matte blue? - but the link to the Performance Center is no longer there. This is the closest I could find on their new site:
Specialty Services - Smith & Wesson

Those grips came on the gun. The gun in the picture is a Model 57 with a higher finish than the Highway Patrolman, so don't expect the same end result.
S&W charged about $250 including return shipping to refinish the gun.
It took about a month to get it done.

Iggy,
I am officially jealous.....that is one gorgeous 57.....wanna trade? I had a factory nickle 57 and traded it off rather than send it to Smith for refinish work....it had the original wood box and all....maybe I should have gone ahead for $250, heck the gun looked unfired other than the nickle issues (sat in the box all its little life)....great looking 57, I bet it shoots well too

Yes they will, expect to pay a hefty price though. Find a great gunsmith, they should be able to finely prussian blue your gun for half of S&W price

States that their Services are for 1990 or Newer guns only???? WTH?
I have an old pre 18 that could really use a reblue...internals were fine. Tried to send it in six or so years back. They would NOT touch it. Stated they no longer had internal parts for the older guns.
I called and asked them to simply reblue forget about the internals...they refused.
Maybe someone here has had an older gun reblued lately.

That is NOT what the website states. It states that EXPRESS services are only available for unaltered guns from 1990 and newer.
Express Services
•Fast 5-Day turnaround on select Gunsmithing Packages
•Priority Pick-up and Delivery Service
•Customer must call Customer Service at 1-800-331-0852 to set up Express Service
•Round-trip Freight and Handling Prepaid and Billed at Corporate Rate
(Note: This cost not included in prices shown)
Express Service Packages are designed for unaltered guns 1990 and newer. Finishing and major component replacement (barrel, cylinder, frame or slide) cannot be done as Express Service.

Sorry about the bad link, I couldn't find the current PC page.
The official cut-off date is model-marked guns or 1957, steel-framed only, per a recent conversation I had with one of the PC staff. The reason given was the parts availability issue.

Total BS - they do reblue original finish and will not buff out your logo in the process.

I stumbled across a Model 29-5 .44 Mag last year at my dealer's. It had been a police department trade-in (can't recall if it was an evidence disposal or a recovered stolen), and was a little beatup when the dealer got it.
He sent it to S&W for a complete re-finish, after which it sat for some unfathomable reason with no buyers till I was finally able to come up with a combination of trade & cash to take it home.
It is simply the prettiest S&W I've ever seen in a "plain" (as opposed to a fancied up version) factory configuration.
Actually looks far better than I've ever seen a new revolver come out of Smith & Wesson. The cost was under $200, if I remember right, I got a copy of the invoice with the gun.
It looks so nice, in fact, that it's one of only two guns I own (the other being a Colt Python) that I'm reluctant to use in the field & wear the finish on, even though I bought it to be a user.
As mentioned, don't expect that level of polish & bluing on a 28, but I mention it to say they do great work & the prices are not out of line for the quality.
No over-buffing on my gun.

S&W rebluing service is top drawer
I just got my Pre-model 17 K-22 Masterpiece back from S&W 2 weeks ago. I had it reblued, and they replaced the Hammer and Trigger with a new case hardened set. The re-blue was $185 + $20 shipping back to me. The Hammer & Trigger job was another $85. Best money I ever spent. Their bluing was perfection and the K-22 was far better than I ever expected when I got it back.
Here are a couple pictures of the work they did, before and after
Regards,
Gearchecker

Oh my pride. I should have known that LOL.
My dad changed out the OEM grips with another type of grip. I want to keep the gun as stock as possible.
Thanks for the info!

Anybody have a pic of the glass bead nickel finish? Not sure what that would look like. Is it similar in appearance to a matte stainless?

I checked my records and I'd called S&W way back in 2005 regarding a refinish on my pre 18. At that time they stated they no longer had internal parts for the older guns...so didn't want to do the refinish.
THIS is good news. My pre 18 is a 50% gun at best. Shoots great, but would look FAR better reblued. One of those "take it to the grave" guns anyway..so who cares if it's refinished?

Honestly--S&W WILL NOT touch aolder gun for refinishing.
Take a look at this 1954 K-22 of mine. i got it from an Uncle and it had set up in a holster for YEARS---see the finish.
S&W would not refinish it because it was old and they didn't have parts if something would happen.
james Willis in Shreveport did the refinish---Clarks even refused to do the work.
Blessings

I believe they will because there is a picture on this forum of a factory refinished M28 which was done in high polish blue.
Back in the day, S&W did not offer a change of finish on the M28, so they would refinish in the satin or matte blue, or whatever they called it, but they would not put the high polish blue like on the M27. I understand that is no longer the case, and they will do whatever you like on your M28.

Very Timely thread
I just bought this "...well used" 36 and am going to refinish it. I'm debating modern super finishes vs old time blue. Even though I have access to a wonderful gunsmith with great creds for making this into an upgraded modern belly gun, if I could get the blue, I'd might go with it just out of respect for tradition and throw in a factory function test and repair 'as required'.

Hey bullboo1, your post is important, even if it is a couple of years old. If you, or anyone for that matter, has a restoration project that you "think" S&W won't touch, then go to Ron?s Gun Shop. Antique Gun Restoration, Gun Bluing and Custom Gun Blueing Services for all your refinishing/restoration needs. FWIW, Colt and S&W have a lot of their refinishing requests outsourced to him.

Anybody ever sent one to Fords firearms refinishing? I think they are in Fla. They can re-roll the stampings and logos, and their pics show some really beautifull work.
