s3dcor isn't a wizard, he's giving you the date out of the Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson 3rd edition. Available on-line at Amazon and local book stores.

The factory more or less kept to the alphanumeric system, with many exceptions. The CEN prefix for the model 640 Centennial was out of order, as was the LGT for the 317 (lightweight). So when the prefix is not listed in the SCSW there is a lot of inference and guessing between known dates. Hope this is helpful.

June 1996. A pre-lock, pre-MIM, drilled & tapped, 7-shot M686 is a highly desirable and fairly rare revolver. Not many were made before the -5 came out. Assuming 98% condition, I'm thinking $700 to $850 to a knowledgeable buyer. Plus $50 for a 4-inch. Plus $50 for the blue plastic factory case. Plus $100 for a 3-inch.

.357 Mag Mod 66-2
I bought this revolver for my fiance for our anniversary and I would like to know what year the gun was manufactured. He has no idea about the gun yet, but I would at least like to provide him with as much information as possible. The man who owned the gun bought it brand new and it has never been fired. He said he can't remember the year he bought it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

What is the 3 letter prefix in the serial #?? That prefix will get you in the ballpark on the production date. Better yet, if you have the original box, the "SPEC. ORD." number will give a specific date (in Julian code).

The Model 66-2 variant was made from 1982 until 1986, so sometime within that range. Any closer would need the serial number.
Many folks don't like posting serial numbers on internet forums. If so, we usually suggest posting the first 3 or 4 digits or letters and using x's to finish, such as ABC7xxx. That would let us get closer to a correct shipping date.
That is a very nice gift.
