Congrats! I have the 44Mag version. I did put Pachmayr Compact grips on for a better hold that doesn't add too much bulk.

Nice Snubby! Hey, what kind of holster is that? I like the cylinder-above-belt style. Nice looking speed loader pouch too.

Good lookin' piece, how much does that puppy weigh? Smith and Wesson's new site took off the weight of their guns and it is driving me crazy. Anyway, very good looking piece, and I am sure the recoil is a fun too, I carry the Model 29-2,blued, 4 inch barrel or the 6 and a half, so both mine have less recoil but I have always wanted to shoot one of the light ones like yours or the scandium version, they have their perks too, but I am an avid model 29 fan of course!!

The gun weights are still listed - just have to click on the gun for more details. Not too much different in weight from the 629PC w 2 5/8 barrel compared to the standard 4" barrel (39oz vs 41oz). Now when you talk Scandium - that is where the wrist breaking factor comes into play.

hello the holster is a galco rh tan leather high ride silhouette. the speed loader carrier is a de-santis second six speedloader holder. I have big hands, but hate to change the wood grips at this time. due to the torandoes that came thru south east michigan, I have been busy, so no range report yet.

The 2 5/8" new PC 629 & 657 weigh 39.6 oz in the 2010 S&W catalog, while the slightly shorter cylinder, with eight .357M bores, of the 627 variant makes it weigh in at 37.6 oz.

The Ahrends non fg rounded in cocobolo offer a far better fit than the original Eagle boots - or the new replacements they sent me. Great hand feel - fine for OWB carry, the revolver was too large & heavy for a CCW anyway. Neat revolver!

Wow, dropshot, or should I say neighbor, I thought I was doing good carrying my L-Frame 686 SSR (4"), now I feel like a piker.

I hope you made it through the storms alright. I'm about 75 miles NNW of Detroit so we missed the worst of it.......

Not to hijack the thread, but does the 3" barrel of your 657 stick out from the bottom of the Galco holster?

I have 3 N-Frame 3" guns, and use a Wild Bill's Concealment paddle holster most of the time, but I would like to have a holster with a thumb break for certain occasions.

Take care,
Bob S.

I recently purchased the 44 Mag version of that same gun, a 629PC with the 2 5/8" barrel. I took it to the range last Saturday for the first time and put about 30 rounds through it. These were handloads, the CastPerformance 300gr. bullets ahead of a stout, but less-than-maximum charge of W296. I haven't swapped out the grips, have the original boots on it, and am sure that some of the grip options that others have posted here might give more shooting comfort. I don't mind handgun recoil too much, but quickly discovered that this gun does require a certain grip technique. I didn't wear gloves either, rarely do when I shoot, and my hand was still stinging a few hours later, but was fine by the next day. I was able to knock bowling-pins off the table with relative ease (although not incredibly fast) with this gun. I'm not entirely sure what I'll use it for, though. As others have commented, it's not an optimal choice for CCW. It's probably not a good hunting gun. It'd be okay to carry here in griz country for hiking/backpacking/huckleberry-picking, but I think I might prefer to continue carrying my even heftier 4" 500 for that. Still and all, it's a nice gun and fun to shoot.

I have a 3" 625 that wears S&W Combats cut down even with the bottom of the grip fame. The Combats seem to be made thicker than other boot style grips and handle heavy recoil well. I find that 255 gr. bullets at 920 FPS out of the short barrel is not that hard on my hand. Most other grips that I have tried are immediately painful.

I can't help but wonder why they don't put fluted cylinders on these short revolvers. That would save a bit of weight or at least keep it out toward the front where it would be more beneficial.

I agree with both of your points, find that the boot grips are a bit on the thin side, wish they made them thicker, and also don't understand the unfluted cylinder on an otherwise minimized gun. The weight savings wouldn't be much, but it seems to me it would be more in keeping with the basic philosophy (assumed) behind these guns.

I find that the finger grooves in both the old Combat grips as well as the boots are in the wrong place for me. If I move my hand to accommodate the grooves it's wrong, and if I just grip the gun the way I want to, the grooves and raised portions seem to be backward.....for me. That said, I hate rubber grips, get rid of them on all of my revolvers (except for the 500!!), and much prefer smooth or checkered wood with no finger grooves. I may see what I can come up with for the 629PC one of these days.

I sometimes carry a 327NG with Ahrends. I carry it in a Smartcarry holster when I am biking or under shorts. I like it.

Thanks cal45, I see that now! When they first got the site up Smith forgot to put the weight in the more info page. That is usually the first thing I click on, and I remember having to log onto Buds Gun Shop to find weights. I am glad they have it on there now!!!!!! I don't mind weight to my revolvers, I used to carry the SAW so anything feels light now!!!!! It helps so much on the recoil too, I carry the model 29-10 and love it!!!!!!!! I am going to start shooting ICORE with it as well, cause the IDPA rules say I can't use it there cause of the 6 1/2 inch barrel rule, I can't wait!!!!!!!!

Surprisingly, this 24-3 with modified grips, carries very well.

The Simply Rugged holster brings it up high enough to be comfortable. It also carries my Pre-27.
