I attended the local gun show today and bought a 27-5 with a 5” barrel, blue finish. According to the book they made a production run of 1500 of these with 3 1/2 and 5 inch barrels in 1991. I have never seen a 27-5 before.
I picked it up today. Here is a photo of it with a set of Herret stocks.

Interesting. I thought that the 27 series pretty much ended with the 3's but, obviously not. I have a 3. It's not pinned or recessed. Have you checked the Smith & Wesson Standard Catalog to see what engineering changes were involved with the 5? Such as, for example, the substitution of MIM parts for previously used forged parts? Would that be one of the changes? I'd love to see a photo and find out how it shoots. What did you pay for yours?
According to the Smith & Wesson Standard Catalog the -5 engineering change was a longer stop notch in the cylinder. It ran from 1989 to 1992 with 110 made in 1997. I cannot pick it up until July 1. I will post photos after that date. I paid $600 for it.
