28-2 Not Pinned
Looking at a 28-2.. Book says -2 should have pinned barrel and recessed chambers. This one has recessed chambers but barrel is NOT pinned. Serial number looks like 952xxx. I'm betting it was a VERY late 28-2 and ended up with a non pinned barrel. Thoughts?

Serial number should start with a "N".

Yes, for many models in the early 1980s the factory ran out of pinned barrels before recessed cylinders. Often termed a "transitional" gun.

A lot of transition guns around 81/82. I have a 67-1 with an old K serial number and non pinned barrel.

Iirc the revision number change usually denotes a new different part from the previous revision, deleting the barrel set pin did not require a new different part so when the order came down the revision number didn't change until they ran out of recessed cylinders.
Once that occurred the revision advanced to denote the new different part from previous revision.
Please note rule #1 with S&W is there are no hard rules with S&W so there will be models with revision changes that are exceptions to the rule.

S&W did not waste parts. It is quite common to find firearms made just before and just after a design change that have a mix of parts.

As a corollary to that, they never seemed to dispose of any old parts, even when the guns went out of production. Witness the 1946 M1917s assembled for sale to Brazil from parts left over from WWI !
