J frame grip screw
I just purchased a M&P 340 which is now my BUG - carried primarily in my front pocket where it all but disappears. My only complaint is that on hot and humid days, I've been getting some minor rusting on the grip screw. Is my best bet to replace it to try to find a simlar stainless screw at Home Depot, or does someone happen to offer the exact part in stainless already?
Thanks for any help you can give me. . .

S&W screw threads are proprietary with S&W. Off the shelf won't fit, unless you re-tap for a different size. Possibly a very light spray (screw removed from grips) with a clear poly or lacquer to protect.

i agree. one of the reasons i went with the hogue was the screw rust and the grip screw housing rust. i also appreciate the recoil explosion absorbtion of the hogue bantam grips - the best. i pocket carry and ankle carry and see zero issues with either draw with this rubber grip.
btw, i got mine from midwayusa ( Hogue Bantam Grips $18.49) and they are on my 642-1 no-lock and 342Ti AirLite.

I checked with S&W when mine rusted, and learned they do not make stainless screws for J's. I removed mine and cleaned it well with a Dremel brush. I replaced it and put a drop of melted candle wax into the screw channel. The wax seals the screw head from any moisture but is easily removed and replaced as needed.
I had the same problem with the grip pin on my S&W 457.

Thanks for the heads up about the Hogue Bantam grips. I think I'll have to check with Midway about ordering a pair. I discovered that the stock grips that came with my M&P 340 also do not appear to be 'fully relieved' and have an issue with HKS speedloaders. They've gotta go. . .

J frame screws are proprietary? Don't understand that? Can't say for sure, but K frame screws are plain old 5X40 TPI. Why would the others be different? My problem very recently has been they don't seem to know what length screw to send with replacement target grips. Had to get a very nice fellow named Paul to correct the problem for me at S&W.

Another voice in favor of Hogue Bantams.
I bought a Chiefs Special that was wearing them. Couldn't figure out how to get them off to clean the Chiefs so called Hogue. The nice lady in customer service sent the "tool" they make just for that purpose. Brilliant.
Two credit cards (or similar thin plastic) work like the tool, but you have to work a bit harder.
Thread needs a photo. Here's my 1989 Chiefs Special Model 36-2, Double Action Only wearing them.
I much prefer them to Uncle Mike's boot or any model Pachmayr.
