can anyone suggest a good leather holster for my model 627 8 shot. I would prefer an open bottom holster, but can't seem to find hardly anything specifically for an 8 shot cylinder.
Assuming you're not wanting to conceal it (-beautiful gun, btw, congratulations!-) the Galco D.A.O.126 and PHX126 fit this model (w/ a 4" barrel) and might suit your needs.
Boy do I miss those. I even made a number of them for friends in the old USPSA days. Today there aren't many to choose from. The Smith & Wessons are probably the best.
I'd highly recommend reaching out to Ray over at Lobo Gun Leather - Home and seeing what he can do for you. He whipped this one up for my 242 (7-shot L-frame) in just five weeks (would have been four but he had to re-do the dump pouch to make sure it was right - his decision, I wouldn't have quibbled!):
I have heard nothing but good from Lobo's leather but have no experience with them. I do have experience with several leather goods from El Paso Sadderly. Under their duty holsters are open bottom as desired or look under their hunting/field for some other excellent models.
that smith and wesson looks pretty good. Most of the holsters I see are massive looking. I know it's a massive gun, but looking for a fairly minimal holster.
I really like the Bianchi Cyclone. I use is for my 4" 8-shot 627Pro, my 4" 6-shot 625JM, and my 4" 6-shot 610. It is made very well, has multiple options for different angles of carry and can be used as a cross draw.
I thought they made a 4" version too.. But FWIW I use a Mernickle PS6DA and an old Sparks VM2 for my 3" - 4" N frames, 6 and 8 shot. Neither holster is so tightly boned that they don't work.
I think (hope!) that you are going to be pleased. I only have one, purchased fairly recently, and just ordered another one for a different gun. I didn't go with any of the fancy stuff, just kept it basic and simple, although I admit that I was tempted by some of the decorative work. I find the holster that I do have completely in keeping with the name of the company, simply rugged. It is heavy plain leather, very no-nonsense, and cradles the gun fully and firmly. It would not be my first choice for an IDPA or IPSC competition holster, but for general utility carry I think they are great.
