Default My New Critter - 627 Snubby

Well, we did it. The other day i went down to my local Gun Dealer & picked up a brand new 627 PC 8 shot N-Frame snubby. The Boot grips were a little small for my big hands so called S&W. Got the Grips which comes with the 5" 627. Lot better feel. My Ring & Little finger were just hanging off the Boot Grips. Now I can wrap the whole hand around the grip. If you're interested in the grip it is S&W SKU number: 414170000, and ran $49.00 from S&W. The S&W Logo seems like its burned into the wood. Then got into the IL. I really don't like the IL. Ordered "The Plug" from our friend John aka Bullseye Smith. Did a "lockadectme " and "Plug implant". Worst part was getting the 3 side plate screws off. S&W must have had a gorilla tighten them up at the factory. Got 'er back together & cranked off 50 rounds of Winchester 145 gr Silvertip HP 357 Magnums through it. The 627 snubby just didn't kick like my L-Frame 686 snubby on recoil. Guess it was the heavier N-Frame. Real good shooter. One of our forum friends "Cocked & Locked" here suggested the 5-Star Speedloaders. Lots of rounds, but they work excellent & the rounds stay in there well. The speedloaders are around $25.00 each. Saw where Thunder Ranch also has them, but they want $60.00 per speedloader. Too much. Heres a couple pictures of the new critter.
Thanks for looking.
Carl

Very nice! I've been leaning towards picking one of these up, but I can't seem to get my hands on one locally.

Yes, they're kinda hard to find. We have 3 gun stores here in town & none of them had them. They said even their distributors didn't have any. So started looking at various S&W Dealers. Called the Village Pawn & Gun Shop in Wadesboro, NC. They have several. The 627, 629 & that one in 41 caliber in stock. Sent them a check & they shipped it down here to my local Dealer.

That is a gorgeous gun! How did you manage to get one with a fluted cylinder, though? I thought the new ones all came unfluted???

Your 627 sure does have a lot of holes in the cylinder, I don't think that I can count that high. Very nice.

Very interesting indeed! Is that an alloy & sleeved barrel?

I just ordered one of these! I also like those grips, and wondered about them because I saw some 327 PCs with them and some with Ahrends. I'll have to order some form S&W, thanks for providing the serial number.

And if there are any other poor unfortunate forum members from California, this is headed it's way to our safe handgun list.

Where did you learn that? I emailed S&W a couple weeks ago about this specific model and any plans they had to get it on the CA roster; their email reply stated:

"Because it’s a performance center gun it might not be submitted
Depends on sales"

All right! I've been wondering how I could get one of these. Best news on the California gun front I have heard in a long time.

EDITED TO ADD: Aha! Lemeni's post popped up before I finished typing mine. I'll be glad of any further info on this model with respect to its CA availability.

lemeni,

Well, they had both the fluted & unfluted cylinders up there & i said "ship me the fluted one".

SaberOne,

It is a sleeve over the barrel. Haven't taken it apart yet, but would guess its a steel barrel. I don't really know. Heres a pic up close of the barrel front & you can see the inside barrel.

For Sheriff Tom who PM'ed me, heres a pic of that Speedloader. The company says its made of aircraft aluminum. Heres the link to their website: http://www.5starfirearms.com/index.html
And heres a pic of the Speedloader. I haven't found a Speedloader pouch yet thats OK. Don't go with the 5-Star pouch. Its tooo Big. Been talking with David Bullard & he says he can make a holster for the 627 snubby. But he has a 10-12 week time span.

Thumbs up

lemeni and DCWilson,

I called S&W and was told the 627 and 629 snub nosed PCs had been submitted but the gentleman who answered the phone didn't know when they'd be added to the list. He said that it's not a "first in first out" set up there at the CA DOJ.

So next I called the CA DOJ. They were very friendly. She first came back and said she didn't see anything coming down the pipe, and that she'd call her person at S&W. I called again the next day and she said they were in fact headed our way, and she didn't know a date but said probably in a month or so. Unfortunately the 586 L Comp is not planned to be submitted.

So I went ahead and ordered one for $885. That's all I know, but I put my money down because these things are gonna disappear the second it gets on the list. They already seem to be drying up.

exfebee,

Maybe they ran out of unfluted cylinders and did a few with fluted? Ironically, Clint's 627 in Bloodwork is fluted.

exfebee, that's not a critter, that's a critter getter. And a fine one at that.
While I do not like the S&W lock and a lot of the new S&W guns this one is pulling my chain. If I find one with the fluted cylinder that may be too much temptation.
By the way, very nice pictures.

esfebee: That is like the crown on all the PC slabside guns that I have seen. The two piece system has a kind of button on the end in the pictures that I have seen. I think that is a one piece barrel.

but . . . why the speedloader at all? Your 327 PC has the capability of carrying your 8 rounds in moon clips!

Hey Carl,
By the picture the special order "PLUG" matches good. Plus the clip is alot easier to put in and stay in. Very nice gun, when I get back to work I will have to get one.

This is the first one of these from the latest run that I have seen with a unfluted cylinder.
I like the new grips that you put on it.

Beautiful example of the Performance Center's work. Love those speedloaders, especially if you are going to be carrying your spare ammo in your pocket.

Moon clips are great but it doesn't take much to bend them.

Moon clips don't pocket carry or even carry as well. Especially the thinner .38 moon clips.

Thumbs up lookin' good

You done good Carl! Nice looking plus you've got the fluted cylinder (no fair.) Once you got the .357 Mag 8X urge you got it all together quickly!

I'm thinking these have a solid one piece barrel and not a sleeved one. Mine appears that way...I could be wrong.

The manual that came with the 627 shows a barrel inside the sleeve part. But then again it is probably a generic type manual. The extra weight on the 627 isn't that much of a difference. The grip adds about an inch to the bottom over that Boot grip which it came with.

Default 627 PC

I like the fluted cylinder. I was thinking of sending mine back to have an extra fitted. Also changed the grips to Pachmayer compact grips like the ones on the Night Guards. Even with 357 Magnums its pleasant to shoot. Went back and ordered all three UDR's .357,.41 and .44 just waiting for the permits so I can pick them up. One of the LEO's ordered one for offduty carry he like the one I had so much.

In your first picture and your third picture, your 627 (which is awesome by the way) has it's cylinder open and swung out with your hammer cocked. How is that possible?

As you mentioned pics #1 & #3 had the hammer cocked back with the cylinder open. To do that first open the cylinder, then pull the cylinder release knob back & while holding it back just cock the hammer. You can release the knob & the hammer will stay back. BUT before you push the cylinder back in ALWAYS ease the hammer down while also easing the trigger forward. Be careful if you push the cylinder in first & the hammer is cocked back it will more than likely go off & fire that round. Good luck.

John you PM'ed regarding the Grips. They are S&W Product Code number: 414170000, & Just identified on the Invoice as: " N RD Walnut For Perf. Center "
Heres a little better close up view showing the Burned-In S&W Emblem. They ran $49.00 plus shipping.

Thank you. The manual which came with my 627 just showed as a 2 piecer- barrel & sleeve. But the manual - if you can really call it that - didn't have the model gun on it. You know like a Generic type manual.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I have one of the original "Bloodwork" guns, which is essentially the same weapon W/O the IL. It is a really nice shooter, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have.

Heres a little better close up view showing the Burned-In S&W Emblem. They ran $49.00 plus shipping.

If only this were about $150 cheaper. I'd be all over one.

Great pictures!!! Any chance you could take a picture of the 627 Snub next to a J frame? I am really curious as to the size difference. I haven't seen the snub locally. (I know this thread is 6 months old too. )

Carl

No problem.

As HKS or Safariland don't make 8 rounders, I think these are the least expensive out there. I heard Thunder Ranch sells some, but they're something like $50.

I have both the Thunder Ranch and the 5 Star. Two different types.

The Thunder Ranch are more expensive, position sensitive but hold the cartridges much more securely and also deeper in the loader.

The Five star are more affordable but have a very loose feel to them and are not position sensitive.

By Position sensitive I mean the alignment of the loader relating to the frame side.

Hope this helps!

All you need to do now is cut off that hammer spur and it will be perfect.
