I'm starting to understand the legend of the K-frame.

I had never really gotten to know my 66-3. I bought it in the mid-90's and very shortly thereafter it became a car gun for my wife. It rode around tucked in there for years and only rarely got to the range. In fact for many years between 1997 and 2008 I rarely got to the range myself.

I've since found something else my wife likes well enough to make the car gun and am spending more time with the 66.

It may soon pass my 629 Classic as my favorite revolver.

I was doing dry fire practice and I was simply amazed at how smooth and clean the double-action stroke is. This gun has never been worked either. I bought it from the guy who bought it new and he was a co-worker so I know all its history.

Feeling the love so much I had to snap another picture. The target is from a few weeks ago. 12 rounds double action from 10 yards (need to work on those flyers).

That's a great example of the "K-frame legend".

You're preaching to the choir ,brother.

Let us know when you buy your next one .

Singing the praises of the Smith and Wesson ,Amen!

Allen Frame

I have a 4" 66-1, P&R w/bullet bedrooms. THE first stainless S&W I bought and one I will never sell. It works ALL the time, and is appropriate in any and all situations. Plinking with .38 spcl, personal defense with +P or all out with 158gr Magnum loads.

Enjoy.

There's a reason Bill Jordan called the Combat Magnum "a Peace Officer's dream".

Of course.....there was no lock on his, and no Mim parts........ otherwise, he may have had a nightmare instead.....:p

I've got a 66 no-dash, 4". I destroyed the "collector" value a lot time ago. I had it Mag-na-ported, and then sent it to Weigand for a complete rework into double-action only. The gun is a dream to shoot. It balances perfectly. And I have no intention of ever selling it (so the collector value thingy is of no consequence). I'll eventually gift it to my Son. But no time soon. I also have a 4" 64 that's also a dream to shoot.

The K's are the best that S&W has ever made. Unless you're looking for long term heavy magnum shooting, then you need to look at L's or N's. I shoot 38's in it most of the time, and carry Remington Golden Sabre's in the chambers. Kind of a .357 -P. It gets about 12 of those through it every time I take it to the range, and about 200 38's.

Yes, K's are a wonderful little invention. But don't tell anyone. Let's keep it to ourselves and maybe the prices might fall a little so that we "few" in the know can scoop up some more. HA HA HA HA! :)

Enjoy, and treat her right. No steady diet of Heavy Magnums. OK!

Take Care, God Bless, and WATCH Your Back!

And now you know why everyone is begging smith to start making the 19/66 etc again ;)

The new Model 15 looks like a .38Spl version of the Model 19. It's definitely not the Model 15 of yesteryear but it looks like a nice revolver.

the K-frame .357 is the greatest achievement S&W ever brought to the public & law enforcement, IMO....

not the flashiest, biggest, or baddest...but definitely the handiest (and arguably the most effecient)

I'd bet there are a whole lot of living peace officers and deceased bad guys who would agree with you on that statement there MP

Yes. I've always been a full-house magnum guy. Had a 686 prior to my 629 and carry a SP101 often. They can digest those 125gr screamers all day.

When I re-tasked the 66 I was doing some internet prowling and only then did I learn of the forcing cone thing and how full house abuse would wear and tear things.

So I've developed a cast 140gr load over 8.3 gr of Accurate No.5. It's a nice heavier than .38 +P but not boomer magnum load. It's the load that shot the group I posted to open the thread.

I've even begun the process of transitioning my main carry load (always carry factory) into Remington's 125gr Golden Saber. They're downloaded a bit from the standard 125gr. If they made it in a 140 or 158 I'd move to those.

66-2

I have a 66-2 four inch that is also my favorite.

Hi,
All I know is the K frame is the revolver I shoot the best. Fits my hand the best, points the best for me and is very accurate. I have small hands and I am more comfortable shooting my K frames.

Here is two of my 4 inch K frame magnums.

Nice shooting. That tight grouping would take care of the bad guys with supreme ease.

That's cool that you've made a new "discovery" with an exhisting gun you've had for years.

As many here, I started in 1971 in LE with an early 66, 4". I carried it for several years before changing to a 2 1/2 inch 66 in 1980. I carried it for a couple of years before changing to a 1911 of some sort which I carried for 25 years or more as a duty gun. I still kept my 66 2 1/2 inch and carried it often in the woods etc. I sold it a couple of years ago to get a 3" 66-2 and love it. I will never sell it. K frames are great!
