What model is the fixed sighted one??

I've had a few that fit the bill over the years but I think a couple of months ago I bought what will be my constant companion and thats a Lew Horton 624, the only thing wrong with it is that its a 624 and not a 24, blue steel looks better with ivory grips, as to leather I make my own and I am in the process of making a Threeperson holster for it. Wish I knew how to post pics.

+1. My M66-4 4 inch loaded with 158gr SWC will do the job. And the M66 as well as the M19 was the lawmans dream carry revolver for years. I hate to clone the saying but "Everything you need in a revolver and nothing you don't need".

Still one of the best all around revolvers.

I'm not bothered by weight when carrying a gun in the mountains and so for a long time I carryed a ruger superblackhawk .44 with 4 5/8 barrel. I then switched to 10mm (g29 or Colt delta elite) I just picked up a model 686-5 mountain gun in .357 and am so happy with it that I think it fits the the PPP. I used to never carry anything but revolvers but for a time I got caught up in semi autos. It dawned on me one day at the range that I had never had a reliability issue with revolvers. They always fired with minimun maintenance. Semi autos with one exception have had issues at one time or another. I think starting in the spring I'm going back to the revolvers full time. Now if we were just talking about two legged critters and not four legged that could eat you, I'm fine with a beretta 92. Since 83 I have never had one not fire. Now the calibers I choose fit where I live. Some where else I might choose otherwise.

I like my 24-3 4", my 66-3 3" lew horton special. Knowing what I know and if somehow I had no guns, I would get either a model 21 or possibly a 22. (Do they make similar in .45 colt?) I also have a 4" 25-5.
44 special, 45 acp or 45 colt. Take your choice, I doubt you could tell the difference. A fixed sight 4" tapered barrel N frame in any one of them would be close to idea once you had a favorite load worked out to hit your POI. If you didnt reload, probley you would be best off with the model 22 in 45 acp.
I probley wont be buying one though as I have similar.

My two cents has me packin' a 1911 in .45 acp. I usually have my Wilson Combat CQB in tow. It is under my left arm as I type in a Galco Miami Classic. J.M Browning was/is the inventor of the most incredible sidearm ever---IMO. As for a revolver, there is no doubt that mine is a -6 model 625 in 45 Long Colt(Mountain Gun) with a 4"bbl. Capable of loafers at @750fps or bear stoppers......Again, JMO.

Go big or stay home

Out of all the guns I've owned, of all brands, I tend to keep coming back to one model in particular. It embodies all the characteristics of a packin' pistol to me. I have an early 642-1 now, but I've owned countless variations of it in the past, and I just keep coming back to it. I've tried short barrelled K frames, which I LOVE, but simply don't carry because of weight. I've tried Glocks, Government 1911's, Brownings, Sigs, even N frames, and a Colt Agent. The 642 is stainless, so it can be carried in all climates, and all weather. It's light in weight, so it can be pocket carried, belt carried, shoulder carried, or any other imaginable way and it's still comfortable. Mine is plus "p" rated, which means that any commercially available loading will function in it EVERY time with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Without a doubt, the one gun I have EVERY time, EVERY day, rain or shine, hot or cold. How many other guns can say that they get carried in such a fashion?

In summary, I would have to agree...... the perfect packin' pistol is in fact the one you will carry every day regardless of performance.

Yup, he's been known to do some pretty interesting conversions.
RMs and HDs to 44 special are right up his alley.

In my estimation a PPP for the area I live in East of the Missisippi, one that will get the job done be it four or two-legged would be my S&W 4" stainless Mountain Gun in .41 Magnum. Mine is very accurate and you can tailor loads that will handle most any need.

Interesting thread here . . . I'm new to shooting but really love my Sig P220 45 ACP Equinox. I also really like the 686+ 4" 357Mg/38Spcl and the 629 44Mag/44Spcl in 3, 4, or 5 inch. Sooo, my top "PPP" picks are in preferred order::

It will be handled a bit so stainless would be a plus.

Fairly new to firearms, but wishing I had started years ago. I carry a S & W M & P compact 9mm. Not as fancy as some I've seen, but it feels good and that counts a lot in my book.

Have to like my 66 with a 4 inch barrel. Accurate and reliable. Also nice around salt water, which is a very hostile environment. Lots of reasonably priced 38 special for practice, and the JHP and other hot 357 loads will do very well for any sort of critter. Having said that, I also like my Sig Sauer 1911 XO in 45 acp. This is a black finished stainless, and I had the Sig factory do a trigger job for me. I also added walnut stocks, replacing the factory composite bits. I got it about two years ago, and have not had a single mechanical failure of any sort after several hundred rounds, including FMJ and JHP in both 230 and 185 grain weights. I also tried other magazines, including Tripp, Wilson, Colt, ACT MAG and the stock Sig Sauer. No problems of any sort. (I would shoot it more, but given current prices I am trying to show better self control!:-)

For everyday CCW, my little 32 HE snub means that "yea though I go through the valley..." but if I want a walking around gun to face down about anything I'll see in VA, my newly completed Model 616 with full performance loads would be my choice. (Project 616 )

If I were expecting trouble? In the words of the old sheriff, "... If I was expectin' trouble, I'da brought a shotgun!"

i guess it would have to be my 586 in 4". 357 is still a man stopper, will dispatch a deer, and is light enough to carry. i do quite often. i think #2 would be my series 70 colt combat commander in .38 super. concealable, powerful, and heck, 10 round mags...

The fixed sight is a '5 screw' 44 M&P Model of 1950 (Pre Model 21); became the Model 21 c.1958 but wouldn't have 5 screws.

It has a very shortened barrel done by Kieth himself (if I know anything about him.)

The other is a 44 Model 1950 Target (pre model 24) or Model 24, (can't count the screws). Shortened to 3 - 3 1/2".

Well it depends on WHERE I'm packin'.
If the possible "worst case" scenario likely involves meeting with a meth freak in the central plains, I carry a 1911 in .45 ACP or a 9mm P-35.











If the possibilities include Bear, rank steers, etc. my choice would be a Mountain Gun (beginning with cal .4X), mod 58 or a FA 97 in .45 Colt.

Just my opinion, but my favorite caliber for packing is 357 mag. Mdl 66,4" okay but prefer the 3" 66 or 3'' 65. I have a 3", DAO mdl 65 that rides with me all the time. New 640, 357 might do. If expecting trouble an 870 is my choice. Like autos, but am an old revolver man, especially in the woods of maine

For the woods, my 4" model 19 loaded with 180 grain buffalo bore cast magnums in a chest rig.

You've got some real lookers in that bunch.

I'm partial to the HPs myself.

I have carried my Model 58 backpacking, hiking, and canoeing since the 70's in a Safariland shoulder holster. 210 gr hand loads. I'd rather not shoot the biggest critters we encounter up here with anything less than a high power .30 cal, but the .41 is very close to Model 29 specs.

I am an unashamed S&W snob but I must admit my PPP is my Ruger LCR .357 with Crimson trace laser grips. It just plain does everything right!!!

No more woods-carry for me, so it would be my M65 with three-inch barrel.

Re: Op. My PPP is a 4" 28-2 in a nice Bianchi No. 10 Outdoorsman holster. Here in the SE U.S. there is simply nothing in the woods or swamps that will not cooperate if shoot wwith a 158 gr. LSWC at .357 Magnum velocity. If the weather is bad, I'll substitute my 4" 66-3. If i anticipate shots beyond about 25 yds., I'll opt for my 6" 28-2. Regardless, the heavier magnum loads will easily handle game animals in this area up to and including hogs and deer. Should 2 legged problem arise, the same revolver w/ the same load will give sterling service in every possible situation.

This Old Model Ruger 357 that I had converted to 45 Colt a number of yeas ago.

My favorite woods/packing pistol? I sometimes carry my 629 MG, usually loaded with Georgia Arms 240 gr GD .44 spl,no Bears where I camp, just the two legged pest and an occasional Coyote or Wild Dog.
On more than one occasion I will pack my Ruger .357 50th Flattop with Double Tap 158 gr GD HP, just to have that 'Old West' feeling!
But, no boos please, lately I have been carrying my Glock 22 .40 cal more and more it is stroked with 15 rounds of Winchester 165 gr PDX-1. The Glock is lighter, holds more rounds and has been 100%.
Carrying while camping/hiking has almost become a necessity is certain more remote areas. Although druggies are sometimes encountered, my biggest problem has been Coyotes and packs of wild dogs, some of which are Coydogs, the, the worst or the worst, they have no fear of man.

Seriously, the lightweight, hide it anywhere, take it everywhere, carry it every day gun is not the same as the belt holstered larger gun you're going to be packing in the "wilderness". I find a 442 is perfect for the first chore, I think even a full weight J-frame would work, and I do know their limitations including the limited round count. But when I hit the road for a long drive or if I'm planning to be woods hunting I'll definitely call the 442 nothing more than a backup gun. It's perfect for my daily carry but my long, overnight trip PPP guns or woods guns will be one of these: Model 27
4"; Model 686+ 2.5"; maybe a 2" Model 10 simply because of my adoration of those; or a 2.75" barreled Ruger Security Six. Those will do everything I need except maybe handle a 1000 pound bruin but I'll worry about that when I am in bear country.

Well, while I live in a rural area, the area isn't too wild and mostly I'm dealing with varmits. Of the guns I currently own, the ones I pack out to the barn and around the place most often seem to be either my 686-1 6" or a Model 10-6 4". But with +Ps either has the guts for a two legged varmit.

If I want something more compact I'll take my Norinco 1911A1 45ACP. Yeah, I know its not a Colt, Wilson, Kimber, or other high end 1911, but it's amazingly reliable and accurate. And because it's not an expensive pistol, packing wear isn't an issue. It's still stock so it looks similar to Old Tanker's 1913 Colt 1911 above--only in black phosphate.

I live in SoCal where it takes darn near an act of Congress to be able to pack anything more than a squirt gun, but if I could pack one of the guns I currently own I think it would be my 3" 1911. If size wasn't a concern my new M627 Pro would get the call.

Well, it's not pretty, not even particularly well made, but when I'm in the woods likely as not I'll be packin' my Charter arms Bulldog 3". I've had the thing for 30 years, and it's light and unobtrusive, but carries five .44 special rounds, and goes bang when I pull the trigger.

Most of the critters I run into in the woods are more frightened of me than I am of them , so I don't feel the need for an infantry squad's loadout. I have some pretty nice iron, but I don't have to baby this one, and I hardly know I'm wearing it.

S&W Model 60-15 3 inch barrel

My wife and I have favorite his & her guns for packing in Simply Rugged pancake holsters. Her good old 1927 38 S&W Regulation Police (perfect for a woman's hand and shoots like silk) and my Model 15-3 (perfection made better). Why do we love them so much? Love doesn't need a reason.

My perfect packer came from a poster in this thread. It was and still remains my favorite purchase, even though I have a 624 and a 657 in the same configuration now to share the abuse. The 24-3 just has my heart! Few rigs I've made for it.

My 66-4 2.5". Yep, that's definitely the one for me!

I have had a number of packin' pistols over the years. My current outdoors version is my Model 27-2 with the 3 1/2 inch barrel. With the right loads it will take care of anything I am liable to run across.



My concealed carry packin' gun is this little 649, which has already accounted for one woodchuck and a squirrel.



I once carried this old Model 57 around which had once belonged to a Vermont Constable.
Does anyone remember who I sold this gun to? I would really like to get it back.



I had this Model 624 as well. I had Bowen Arms chamfer the cylinder and it had a trigger job done. It was as good a shooter as one could ask for.



I had this little Para Ordnance Warthog for a while, and with ten rounds of .45 ACP it was plenty of firepower.



I thought about getting another one of these someday, this was my Model 25-13 Mountain Gun that had a custom front sight and was my first trigger job.



I loved carrying this all original Flat Top .357, but it was such a nice gun I was afraid it was going to get scratched up and worn. It shot wonderfully though.

I've had several worn out 4" 629's, rebuilt, refinished and reused. They have served me well for a long time tramping and ramming the forests of northern New England, I think the 44 magnum if properly loaded is a most versatile sixgun and really all you need for a center fire woods gun, right now I'm liking the feather weight version and I'm happy with this pair

Just re-read this entire thread. Do you know what I noticed? Everyone has his or her favorite piece, some of us have more than one. Do you know what else I think? I think that any one of them will work perfectly in the role we are discussing. It is familiarity with the gun and knowledge of how that round performs that gives us confidence.

I carried 38 Specials for years always arguing and whining to get to carry a 1911. Well, I was allowed to do that for a few years. Now, after many more years of plain living life, I find that I am just fine with the ol' 38/357 DA revolver, K-frame, thank you. If you do not like my choice then more power to you. Find something that you are completely comfortable carrying and using and it will work perfectly for you.

Sam Colt called his original piece the "Revolving Pistol." Many of the old flintlock single shots were called "Dueling Pistols." So, pistols ain't necessarily auto-loaders.

Back in the 1840s and 50s the "revolving pistols" were the "assault weapons" of their day compared to the single shot pistols.
