586-3 6" with Matte Black Finish?
Wondering if anyone can help?
I have a 586-3 .357 with a 6" barrel. It is original Bought by me in Feb. of 1990 its ser# starts with BDT XXXX. It is finished in matte black, has red ramp, white outline on rear adjustable sight, came with rubber houge grip.
Dealer I bought it from said it was a line of Government models smith ran but screwed up they were suppose to have 4" barrels instead of 6" so he got a lot of them to sell at a good price. Does anyone know if this is true and if so does anyone know how many they ran off? I figure it might be worth something since they never made this model in black for the public.

I think the dealer was misinformed. SCS&W III lists 1989 production of Model 586-3's with 4, 6 and 8-3/8 inch barrels with the glass bead (flat or matte) blue finish. 2,500 4 and 2,500 6 inchers, 1,000 8-3/8 inch with scope mount barrels. Product codes are 103591, 103592 and 103593, short barrel to long. I remember seeing them at several local shops and stores.

The gun is stamped 586-3? I seen what your saying on the internet but this is not a 686.

I'm glad you posted this. I have a 586-3 with the matte black finish and a 4" barrel. I'd like to know a little more about it.

Whoops. Typo. I meant Model 586-3. Fixed it. The rest was correct.

I love the grips. They seem to be a little more comfortable on my k frames. I wish I knew the model and where to get some more. I got mine on ebay. I would get another set in a heartbeat.

586-3
I just bought a 586-3 with a matte black finish and found this thread.
Mine has a 4" barrel and came with over sized Hogue grips. I swapped the grips for a set of custom grips.

Here is an older picture of a couple of 586-3's that I have. I have better grips on them now. I love the matte black finish on these guns.

The matte black looks awesome on S&W's. I wonder why the company didn't offer it on a larger scale ???

586's
My two 586's, the one on the left is the 586-3 in matte black, the one on the right is the 586 no dash in standard blue.

+1 for Buff 2500 each of 4"and 6" barrels. The round butt was also a feature of that run. I've got a 4". Love the bead blasted blue
