Why is the added barrel weight desirable?
Is it to reduce barrel rise, when shooting competition?
Any other benefit?

Looks like it has a trigger stop installed also.
That's a lot of $$ for some added weight out front. Some lead tape would accomplish the same thing if that's what you really want for dirt cheap. MSRP is $1509 for the 629, LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL. I can get a like new pre-lock and pre-mim for 1/2 the price.
Iceburg ahead.

I personally like a heavy gun. Helps with recoil and I think it helps hold a little steadier... Granted the extra weight causes arm fatigue sooner so you typically have to "build up" to it.
I agree it isn't cheap, but I've had several performance center guns and I've never regretted any of them, regardless of price. They all shoot like a dream...

I'm sorry, but that thing is ugly. They could have blended the bottom of the barrel where it meets the frame with a bit more class.

They've had that configuration on and off for quite awhile now.
I like my 629-4 Horton version alot, so far it has shot everything loaded into it very accurately.
eta, I must say that they did go a bit overboard on bulking up the barrel- I think mine looks better

Update... I spoke to S&W about a new 686 6" weighted barrel (170319) and they said it wouldn't ship until spring of 2013

Hey Fella's. Just laid down a deposit last week on both 686 & 629 competitors. Very rare here in OZ. Suposedly only 2 629's coming in country on this shipment. From what I gather is a lot more than just extra weight. Already have a PC 627 V-Comp(8 shot) and am a very happy man. The extra $$$ are more than worth it. Here in OZ we pay about 20-25% more than US. But like my Mumma says"You get what you pay for"
Anyone have any experience with these 2 bad boys?

Yours definitely looks better. Love the way it looks, but personally not a fan of the weights. Never felt the need for one even for 44, but especially for 357.
