yay! posting in a 6 year old thread, Im a contributor! my 686 quickly became my favorite. Got it at a show in 2009 for 450. It was actually in a house fire earlier this year, found it in a puddle of black, ashy water in a half open drawer. took it out, rinsed it off, oiled it up, checked the barrel and shot it. Not as pretty as it once was was still my most accurate pistol. The trigger still feels great too.

Now, my 686-6 5" Pro Series replaces my gone 686-3, 6". Am very happy with it. Saw it at the gun show, and had to have it! Still have my 3" 586 no dash. Bob

You have to love a 13-year-old resurrected thread........so, no real comments, all great guns, enjoy the pictures.....
686+ 3" - 8 - it's way past -3
686+ 2.5" -5 I believe - I haven't dug it out of the safe in a very long time.
686+ 4" -6

I just put a 686-6 Plus 4" on layaway this morning, I had a Ruger Redhawk 6" 44 on layaway, and decided I wanted the S&W more.

Today I was doing the paperwork for a Hellcat Pro and in the case right below me was a 6” 686-3 with original grips that looks like it came right out of the box for 799. When the salesman asked if I wanted to add anything else to the paperwork I buckled and went for it!

Perhaps 10 years ago I swapped a like-new four-inch 686-4 for a polished four-inch 686-3 even-up just to get a square butt so I could use a set of my collected checkered target stocks. I changed the hammer and trigger to target versions but although I dislike polished stainless steel guns I still haven't decided upon having the brushed finish restored.

I like the flash chromed controls on the dash 3 and earlier revisions.
Here are a dash 3 snub. Dash 1 4" and no dash 6".

The 686 is a great gun, looks cool and can eat a study diet of 357 magnum. As said above, the -3 was made between 88-93. The longer the barrel, the cheaper they are. -4 plus 7 shot models notwithstanding, I see nice pre-lock 6” 686s (running $600 to $700+, 4” $750 to $900 and 2.5” $1000 to $1250+.There are better deals out there, but you have to look for em.
