value difference: Chicago PD comm. 66 vs. 629-5 4"
Could use a little input, can someone estimate the value difference between a (circa 1980) Chicago P.D. Commemorative 4" 66 unfired, in the Wooden case, and a 629-5 4" no underlug, just the shroud, rr,wo, tt, th, frame mounted firing pin, pre-lock, maybe 400 rd.s through it, in the blue plastic case with manual.
Would appreciate knowledgeable opining from many sources, I'm really up in the air about a course of action, as in trade for the 66 or buy outright......help!

Commemoratives are a different breed, and the CPD 66's are popular mainly in Chicago and ofcourse Illinois. Just about all major police departments had a commemorative at one time. I remember when these came out they offered them to CPD officers first and a great many of us bought them. Some like myself just put them away and many other officers actually used them as duty weapons. I would estimate current value for NIB examples at $500/600. They are beautiful P&R revolvers with presentation stocks and individual numbers CPD 001 etc.
A 629-5 value can be ascertained by looking at auction sites to see what they're bringing. A used one I think would be worth $400/500 in great condition.

Mag, thanks for the reply. So if I could trade for the 66, I wouldn't be losing anything? Nice to know.....

Out here the 629 guns were always more than a good 66, but 66's seem to be getting more in demand. If it is a 66 with a 3" barrel, that's really choice. You could probably get $650 easy for a really nice one (no lock, forged parts) out here.

Roger, I think it would be a good trade. But since I'n a retired CPD officer I'm biased.

I don't know as to value but personally I'd prefer the 629.

Thanks, guys. Mag, as an aside just between you and me, you realize we lost any chance for concealed carry with this last election? Sheesh.......
Anyway, it's good to know I'd be in the ballpark if I traded, but I believe I'll just pull my shekels together and buy the 66 outright. That way I'll have both. I asked the question at a point where I wasn't sure if I could pull it together, think now I might be able to swing it.
