Default 624/629 Recall Notice

I just picked up a 4" 624 .44 Special. In the box was the certified letter sent to the Original Owner from S&W advising of the recall. I thought I would publish it here since I have never seen a copy of the original letter and thought that it would be of interest.

In case anyone's interested in Pics, I'm including a couple. Normally, I don't take off the sideplate. But there seemed to be grease leaking out from this gun. When I removed the sideplate, it was packed with grease. It looked like Rig. I gave it a thorough cleaning and deburred the buggered screws with emery cloth and now it looks great.

You should contact a mod to have that letter added to the FAQ's, since there is always a question about what marks truly signified the gun had been inspected. This info is in the FAQ's, but I don't believe that an actual letter showing it "as a matter of fact" is.


You have a very fine old gun and should be proud. I would be. I have the blued version just like it.

The small wrinkle at the top corner of the top plate on your gun can be smoothed down to almost nothing with a brass drift or wide tipped brass punch, and a lightweight gunsmithing hammer. Just go nice and easy with it.

Gun 4 Fun,

I sent your recommendation to one of the Mods. I think the letter would be an interesting addition.

I didn't even notice that wrinkle until you mentioned it but I appreciate that you pointed it out and the technique to get rid of it.

Of course you realize that now I'll have to pull out all the other Smiths looking for wrinkles...

Good thing it's winter and there are not that many good shooting days.

Oh, one other thing- make sure that the brass drift/punch has a nice new, and flat face on the end of it. Use a little gun oil to help lube the surface being worked on, which seems to help keep any extra marking away. Remember, take your time.

Ya got me thinking, I have a Model 629, with the box... the gun is stamped 629-2, the box is printed just 629... could this fall into this recall, there is no red c on the box. I inherited this gun from my dad when he passed away 10 years ago, so I really don't know anything else, cept it sure is purty and makes a really really loud bang when you pull the trigger with those 44 mag loads..

Didn't see any mention of serial number range in the letter? Could you elaborate, please?

Ok, think I'm ok, got a V stamp on the cylinder and my serial # starts with BB V84XX

Thanks for the help, now back to playin hooky in the snow here.. gonna have to get suited out and fire up the snow blower at some point, but this is more fun...

JFYI Turbo-
That V doesn't mean a thing. The only mark that ever had anything to do with the recall was the red circle with a "C" in the middle that was stamped on the box end. Just call S&W and give them your serial#. They'll tell you for sure if you have one that will need attention.
