Anyone recognize this gun?
The guy selling this says it is a 29-4. Can anyone offer more info on it? Is it just heavily modified? I would like to know more about it before I decide to talk to the seller. Thanks.

With a serial number someone here with a catalog my be able to tell how modified it is. I think it is a Classic Hunter with an aftermarket front sight and Cerakote finish. I like it. Hard to tell without a catalog if it started out as a three inch. I think they made them in that length, I own a five inch. Theo

Before reading any of the O.P.'s words my thought was it is a 629 with an after market fiber optic and Betty Crocker paint finish. I don't recall any FL 3" 29s. Are you sure about the model number?

In July of 1989 Lew Horton did a small run of (200) 3-inch full lug M29-4's with unfluted cylinders, s/n's had a BDY prefix. Product code 101251. About half were Mag-Na-Ported by LH and have the same PC. Hogues were standard. I don't think the OP's gun came with that front sight or "Betty Crocker" black finish.

I am not sure of the model number. The seller claims it is a 29-4 in his description. There is a blued 3 inch 29-4 (listed that way) on Gun Broker now.

Did a little more research on this gun. Lew Horton did call it the Classic Hunter. There were (3,200) -4's made for LH. The front sight would of been a black ramp with red insert. Shipments extended into August of 1989. Some came with a Pachmayr rubber grip. I've seen Hogues, too, so I think both are possible. For a time S&W used the two interchangeably. The finish was S&W's standard polished blue of that era. It was NOT a matte blue finish.
Given all this, and whether the finish is matte or polished, it looks like perhaps only the front sight is non-original.

It is listed in Armslist here in New Mexico. The guy is asking $750 obo. Since I just picked up the Lew Horton 629-4, I think I'll pass on this one.

I want to say there was a thread a couple of months ago with someone asking opinions on this same gun. It was for sale and they were considering it. I think the consensus that the asking price was too high and if I recall it was $750. I think $600 would be top of the mark for someone wanting a shooter, not a collectible.
