500 magnum non-ported comp?
Hi , I saw a posting in the want to buy section for such a thing for a 460 ?
Was this also made for a 500?
I have a 4" Model 500 and really enjoy shooting it, however no one at the indoor range I shoot at seems to enjoy me shooting it !!!
I am shooting quite mild reloads , sort of a 500 Special type of thing.
350 grain Plated bullets at 1100 ftps ?
However , the porting is very noisy and I just do not believe in it .
I would like to get one of the 5" guns John Ross sells, but at $1500.00
when I paid $750.00 for my NIB used 4" one ...
You guys can probably see my point, a non ported comp would probably do me fine ...

I've heard of people having the .460 non-ported comp machined for the .500, but haven't seen anything from the factory. I'd like one myself, the ported comp is a noisy, filthy animal.

I agree with both of you. A compensator is way to loud. I had a 375 JDJ Contender barrel a few years back. Mark Hampton got it for me from SSK, and he had the SSK arrestor machined in. I was shooting 375 Winchester bullets, and a compensator was not needed. One deer season I was stalking about in a drizeling rain. Good sneaking conditions. Spotted a deer and set up and fired. This was the only shot I ever fired through it with no ear plugs. WOW I did not even hear the gun go off. It was like someone slapped me on both ears at the same time as hard as they could. My ears rang for hours. Mr Smith owns it now.
If I manage to come up with a 500 Bone Collector one of these days, the compensator will be the first thing changed.

I ended up with the John Ross model...the lack of a compensator was just one of the reasons. A real 5" barrel, tighter cylinder gap, satin finish, and the ability to stabilize the heavy bullets were among other reasons...
If you do a search, I seem to remember someone that machined their own non-ported comp after being stone-walled by other avenues. Perhaps they might be of help. Good luck.

I have a chance to purchase a brand new S&W in 500S&W with a 6 1/2" barrel. I been wondering how much recoil it really does have? It is ported along side the front sights on both sides. I think its only 5 shots and it looks purdy over the other 500's i have looked at. Is $1,000 a good price on this new one? Bill

Good luck finding a 460 end cap, they quit making them about 2 years ago, I was able to get one, and had it converted for my 4 inch 500 mag.
You think S&W would make one for the people that want this. Why they quit making it for the 460 mag is baffling to me. Also why they never made one for the 500 mag. They work great.

460 magnum non-ported end cap...
Hey guys,
I have a extra factory made non-ported end cap for the 460 magnum...
I was looking for awhile and almost had a machine shop make some up for me when I came across two of them for sale.
So if anyone is interested, let me know.
Cheers, Ben

The kick with the 6.5" barrel is hard but managable and $1,000 is a good price for a new one. I paid $999 and now at the same shop they are $1,199

Don't mean to offend, but that was a very funny description of a painful situation.

Ben, if it isn't too late...(5 years). I am very interested in your end cap for the 460. I suppose it is a non perforated muzzle break. It would be great if you can reply.
thank you and best regards,
PCH

I also have one of the 6.5 models and although I use plugs and muffs, it is quieter than a regular compsenated model. Paid $995 and thought it was a good deal. I shoot 350 grain Speer with minimum load of Little Gun. Will flip a 12" gong over the frame where a 44 just makes it sway.

I'm looking to sell or trade for a 6 1/2. The 6 1/2 just "LOOKS" right to me. The 4 inch will clear out from under our shooting sheds when it goes off. I have actually seen people turn to run away and run over people standing behind them. One visitor, when everybody was laughing as he ran over a much larger fella, said..Hell I thought it BLEW UP!!!

I made a couple of inserts for my buddy's and mine 460's. Not too difficult if you have access to a lathe. Works pretty good, shot about 600 rounds through mine.
We both use CNC-machined blank compensators now, as there was a guy earlier this year that announced on domestic forums and FB that he wanted to get some blank comps machined, so he was checking out how many who where interested, in order to spread the cost. Turned out to be somewhat expensive, but we bougth one each anyway.
(Here in Norway we can acquire handguns for sporting purposes only, and the "category" in which the 460 "fits into" does not allow for any type of compensator being used (in competition). Every couple of years, someone usually gets a batch of blank comps machined).

I realize this is an old thread....but I have been looking for a solid plug for both my 460 and 500. Been having a hell of a time finding them. Anyone have a lead on where I should look?

I'm looking for a solid plug for my 460 also. Called Smith and they refused to sell me one before they machined the comps into it.

If it's what is called the "half lug" model, personally with my past, I'd pass on that gun and get the 7.5" PC or the 8.375" original model.
I had a half lug and found it far less pleasant to shoot than either my 6.5" PC or original model. Sold it, happy I did.
Not meaning to rain on your parade but giving you my experience with it. Don
