Best 3 inch models
Recently bought my first Smith, a 1990 3 inch 640 in .38 and am absolutely hooked!! Shoots and carries like a dream. Would like another revolver but have heard different reports about which are the best. Does anyone have a recommendation as to which years and or models the best (highest quality) 3 inch guns were? Thank you,

3" barrels are a hot item right now. Grab any 3' S&W that you see at a good price and I think you'll be happy. They come in all frame sizes but some are hard to find and get top $ when found. Good luck with the hunt.

Lots of us love 3" wheel guns.
If we are sticking with J-frames I like the little full lug model 36
Though I have a cute little model 60 with a Power Port
But I REALLY like the bigger 3" wheel guns.
Like the L-comp which is a very cool 7 shot 357 Magnum
Or a nice blue steel 44 Magnum model 29
Then there is a nice stainless steel 41 Magnum model 657
However, my current favorite is my model 610. This is a moon clip enabled revolver that is chambered for 10MM auto from the factory. The moon clips allow the revolver to also fire 40S&W ammunition as well. On mine, I opened the chambers up so that the revolver can also fire the powerful 10MM Magnum cartridge.
What should you get next? The choice is infinite. Many people will give you many opinions. These were mine.
As to a good year. Any S&W manufactured between 1852 and today would be a good choice.

Hello Billy. And welcome to the world of Smith and Wesson revolvers.
Here is a recent thread dedicated to the 3 inch Smith.
The ultimate 3" picture thread. More three inch madness.
Take your pick. Any caliber most any year. There is not a barker in the bunch.
It can take a year to find one. You seem to have gotten lucky with
your 640.
Maybe a nice 3" model 10 or model 13.
Good luck.

Are those Spegel extended boot grips on your 66-4? And how do you like them?
Thanks!
