I looking at a fellow gun club member's 6" 25-5 45 colt to purchase. The gun is in excellent condition. No bluing loss or scratches, and its nice and tight. S&W target grips. Not shot much. No box etc.
Will the 25-5 take stout loads?
Do you think its worth his selling price of $675?
Thanks
I wouldn't try to make a magnum out of it but have read where some guys load 45 Colt to near magnum rates. The price would be better if there was the box but not out of line if in said condition. MHO.
Here's what I've seen numerous times on this and other forums.
"The 25-5's will be good if they have the three letter, four number serial number."
I have no personal experience with the 25-5. I bought a new 25 Classic, a 25-7 and a 25-13 last year, all have correct throats. I was told to test the throat by dropping a .451 diameter bullet into the chambers. If it slides through, throats may be too big. It needs to slide through with just a wee bit of push.
I shoot mostly .452 lead reloads and all three guns are accurate. My 25 Classic is accurate enough to break clay birds on the berm in back of the 50 yard line (about 55 yards) regular enough to make it fun. It shoots about as accurate as my Les Baer 1.5" @50 yard guaranteed PII.
They will take a good full charge, not Ruger only for any length of time. For shooting 2-300 rounds at a range session I like light cowboy loads.
Just my opinion, but the price is a bit high for a 6" especially
if it is an early gun.
I have bought 2 4" a 25-5 and a 25-9 both less than $600.
but I looked for a long time for those deals.
If your friend will let you shoot it with some factory cowboy stuff
and you fall in love with it, I might offer $600. as a fair price.
