Model 16 32 H&R Magnum questions
I ran across a used Model 16 with a 4" barrel for sale.
I have not seen it in person yet.
Please tell me what things to look for.
This is a new S&W to me so I'm not sure about how collectible it is or value.
Thanks for your time.

These aren't as collectable as the earlier Model 16s in 32 S&W Long, but they are becoming more sought after. The 16s in 32 H&R Magnum were made for a short time in the late 80s-early 90s. They were available with either a 4, 6 or 8 3/8" barrel lengths and smooth wood combat finger groove grips.
They are pretty neat and not always easy to find.

They are in someones safe (LIKE MINE ), or being used up, they are rare now on 98%+ guns and in the next 10 years the 95%+ will be rare. Reason why, everyone that gets one loves it so much the they shoot it to deaf . Mine that is 100% goes up in valve every day.

They made around 10,000 of them so I wouldn't exactly consider it rare but they are sought after as they are very fun to shoot!
The combat target grip seems to show up a lot and I would deduct from the price if your gun does not have this grip.

The Model 16 I'm interested in is at 95% condition, according to the owner. He's had it for 12-15 years (second owner I'm thinking).
He has after-market Hogue grips on it currently and "may not" have the original wood grips.
Considering 95% and no original grips, what is a fair price range?
Thanks much for your time

Buy it. I really wish S&W would come out with a new Model 16 and chamber it in .327 Magnum.

I gave $750.00 for mine a year ago with pachmayers, and its probably not 95%. That said, I wouldn't take $850.00 for it today. It is a hoot to shoot.

Ditto. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. I have a 632-1 and the 327 is fun in the small J frame, but it would be even better in a target K frame.

As far as numbers go, SCSW says there were 3630 of the original K-32 .32 Long made from 1947-74. These, of course, have become highly prized by collectors and the price has skyrocketed. The 16-4 .32 magnum full lug was made from 1989-92 in 4", 6", and 8-3/8" barrel lengths, with a total production of 8800.
After looking for several months, I found this one, a 4" LNIB with papers, combats, etc. about 6 months ago. Paid $740 OTD and was happy to do it, wouldn't sell it for that right now. You can find them listed on the auction sites from time to time, and I would consider anything in the $800-$850 range with all the goodies to be a pretty good deal.
As for the specific gun you're looking at, if it is 95% but without the original combat grips and box/papers, maybe $600-$650. I think the combats are generally worth about $150, and the original box/papers maybe another $50. At least you could argue that point with the seller.
If I'm too far off base here someone should be along to correct me shortly...

As stated, the 16-4s will run in the $500,range on the low end, to up to $1000.with box and papers.
I may have foolishly traded the 6" in this picture for a 3.5" nickel 27-2.
But oh well, we do what we do when we do it.
4given,,welcome to the forum! and if you can, do try to make the deal.
Especially if you can get the gun for a good price.
Good luck

Thank you folks so much for all your advice and wisdom sharing.
I'm hoping to actually see this revolver today. (Buyer-seller's work schedules haven't lined up in 3 days).

Preach on brother! I have been begging for that for a while too! I'd be happy to buy one in 6" and 8-3/8".
I have a NIB 16-4 8-3/8" just like Bullseye Smith's that I bought from a forum member last year. It is NIB and staying that way, but I'd really like to get a nice shooter grade version to go with it.
Another member has a 16-4 that has been rechambered to .327 Magnum. He took a rather large bobcat with it. After briefly speaking with him, I want a K-.327 even more!

Bullseye... ok, I'll bite... a 10- what in .32 mag???
Was that a product of a Hamilton Bowen conversion?
I have 2 16-4's with 6" bbl's that have been contemplating on having one re-chambered to .327 Federal, but if something like that can be cobbled together, then I'd rather go that route to have a K-Frame .327, than alter one of my 16-4's if I don't have to.

I got a Model 10 off gun broker for $110 and bought a 32mag barrel and cylinder from Numrich for a total of $250 dollars and I stripped the model 10 and transplant the 32mag parts to it. Joni and I were talking and I told her what I had done and she named it "10-32" Smith & Wesson. It is the second gun in the post on the first page. Here it is - a 10-32 .

What he said^^^^. Nice grips. Like that beautiful streak in the grain. Those would cost over $150 probably.

If I could find the gun you describe (OP) at $800 or less, I'd be on it like a duck on a junebug! Even though I built and own Project 616 I still kick myself for the 6" Model 16-4 I foolishly sold about 20 year ago! The amount of wear you describe just makes it a good shooter, and I've never seen the advantage of box and docs for a shooter, so the only negative I see is the lack of the original smooth combat finger groove grips which I find to be so fine to shoot with. JMHO, YMMV!

I happened on one (NIB) out of a small group of
guns I picked up last weekend.
I did not know squat about the 16-4's but after
the info received here I was surprised.
Upon some research only about 5 have shown on
GB in the last couple years.
As Harrish stated they are bringing close to $1500.00
This one will likely be listed in this forums classified
section in a couple weeks.

That's what I get for just looking at the dates of the latest posts! I was wondering where he was finding prices like that... in fact it wasn't too bad in 2011.

My 16-4 is a 6" and one of the most accurate S&W's I own. A joy to shoot, and shooting light target loads you can load for less than you can buy .22's currently. I gave $800 for mine a couple years ago, and I wouldn't consider selling for any price presently.

Top to bottom they are; 17-6, 16-4 and 14-5 so calibers are .22 LR, .32 H&R Mag and .38 Special. Yes they all get shot but the 14-5 sees the most range time.

Congrats on getting the M16. Even without any sentimental value, they are nice desirable guns. Post pics if you can.
This thread just keeps getting brought back, which is ok with me as we like the M16's.
