Happiness is a new gun! (with pics)
I stopped in my local gun shop Saturday near closing...and came across this beauty that had just been traded in.
I asked my friend (the owner) to set it aside for me. I picked her up today and tried her out. I am very, very happy!
A 686 no-dash (with the "M" repair) 6" barrel with a very solid and unusual mount and Ultra-dot red dot.
The mount allows the use of the iron sights!
Also notice the Houge Rosewood grips.
The scope was zeroed, and as you can see, she shot very well.
A couple of questions for the forum:
1) Anyone know the manufacturer of the red dot mount? There is no name on it at all. It is very well made and you have full access to the irons, plus you can adjust them as well.
2) One small problem. One of the cylinder alignment pins for the star ejector is missing. It doesn't affect function, but is it possible to get a replacement from Brownell's for example? Are they easy to install? Is it just a friction fit or do you loc-tite them in?
I paid $375 out-the-door. I do a lot of business with my local dealer/pusher. He throws me a bone now and then. I am happy!

Excellent price, Numrich should have the pins. Looks like someone twisted the extractor rod off without putting spent shells in the chambers.

Thanks Stan, I'll check with Numrich.
Is the pin a simple friction fit? I have the Kuhnhausen book, but I could not see how the pins are installed.

I thnk the pins just tap in, with a plastic or brass punch. It might help to use a drop of LocTite.
It's no wonder Smith and also Ruger went with pinless extractors!

My guess is Aimtech. I won't swear to it though. Here is a link:

The mount looks like an Aimtech. There was a setup like this on my 627 no dash when I purchased it, in my case the red dot was a laseraim illusion.
You'll find that the convergence between sight and barrel makes this setup pretty sensitive to distance and the weight is a bit high for offhand shooting.
I drilled and tapped my 617 to the new standard pattern and it now has a J Point reflex installed. Totally eliminated the convergence issues and I can now carry it in a very lightly modified standard off the rack Galco.
One thing to be areful about is on my 617 the screw for the yoke only had 1 1/2 threads engaged. If that's the case for you 686 be very very very careful about tightening that screw, try and snug it just a bit too much and you'll strip the threads in the frame. Better it shoots loose then you strip the threads.

I checked out the link and I would say my mount is definitely an "Aimtech."
I will be careful tightening it.
I knew the S&W Forum Members would have the answers to my questions.
Thanks Guys!

The J-Point mounts work great, it's just a little higher than the iron sights.
I found that scopes on revolvers are finicky, you have to zero them at a set range, and they will hit high or low at closer or farther ranges, much more noticeable than iron sights.
