Default 686 ssr misfire

I bought a brand new S&W 686 ssr 357 magnum about 2 years ago and I love it except for a problem with misfires. Right after I purchased it it started misfiring from the firing pin not striking the bullet hard enough and kept getting worse. The gun shop I purchased it fixed it by tightning something. a year later it started doing it again and they told me to send it to S&W for repair. Does anyone know anything about this type of problem or how to get the gun repaired locally as I dont want to send it off.

Thanks,
Mark

Your S&W has a lifetime warranty, call them and they will send you a label to send it back for repair.Don't be surprised if it does not come back in less than a week. They are very fast on warranty work.

It sounds like the strain screw has backed off. Simply removing the grips and tightening the screw will fix the problem
It really is a simple operation that will take about 5 minutes. Much quicker than mailing the gun back to S&W

Do you know anyone at the local range that shoots a S&W often? If so, they will be able to help with many aspects of the revolver

A lot of people on this forum freak out about something as simple as tightening a strain screw. If you want, you can PM me with questions

Default 686 Misfire

Thanks Falguy I will try that. I thought it was a simple fix because the owner of the range had fixed it once. Is this something that is common for this type of gun and is there something to prevent the screw from loosening? guess I should check this when I clean the gun.

Thanks again

If the strain screw keeps loosening then you should get a small tube of blue Loctite (about $5 at a local auto parts store), remove the strain screw, and apply it to the threads of the screw (after cleaning it and the threaded hole in the frame with a little alcohol or gun scrubber) then retighten the screw. This should keep it from ever happening again.
