They are ex-South Australian Police, they have issued K Frame 357s (when the rest of the country used S&W .38s ...Oh....the NT issued Ruger .357s) for many years however they did buy a new batch of 66s in the last 10 or so years to fully re-equip. Now they have adopted the S&W M&P in .40 I believe (I am in New South Wales). Not sure when the internal locks became standard but I would doubt they are all that new. If there are 10K of them (I would be surprised if there were this many) you will find some may be from the earlier issue as well.

They did the same to the NSW police issue model 10 38 spec.

Sent them all back to the States so the none of them could be used against police. That is how these people think.

Australia: How the sale of Australian police guns threatens public health in the USA(Barf Alert)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that when they come back to S & W they would be destroyed.
I don't know this to be true.

...no mate they were all destroyed here (Port Kembla) along with all the spares and such. I watched a number of the milk crates of them get loaded up at Surry Hills for the trip south.

Oh...the Victoria S&Ws mentioned in that link are model 10s for the most part (Victoria issued K Frame .38s and some Js but no .357s).

Any idea how I could find out where my model 10 served overseas? I believe it was sold for export after manufacture because it seems to be marked with an import proof for re-entry into the US. (A stamp that says "Davidsons")

I haven't checked with Davidsons. I know that seems the obvious route to go, but I thought I'd check with you guys first.

It was made in '77, and I bought from a local dealer a few months ago, who I presume got it from Davidsons wholesale not long before that.

A letter from S&W will probably tell you to whom it was exported and from there you may be able to narrow it down.

Knowing the politics of this country I would almost bet my left nut that no ex police firearms will be sold in this country. They'll either be exported or destroied, no matter the cost. Its the way it is. End of story. I know for a fact in the recent past when ex millitary 223 or 308 ammo came up for sale part of the contract was it MUST BE EXPORTED. Some of it was exported to New Zealand and then back here to Australia, reason why there is no cheap ex-army ammo for us any more. I don't know if this is the case 100% of the time but it has happened a lot. Even when government agencys sell spares for their SLR's they generally won't sell them to the VERY FEW Aussies with licences for them, export again. That's life, we cannot do anything about it.

Davidson's? Weird, I didn't know they did imports or trade in's...
Century has also been doing a lot of S&W imports lately too.

Default Re OZ guns

Guys and Gals,
Don't really want to bust you or make any one upset.
The correct spelling for AUSTRALIA is just that. I note many posters add an extra i.
Remember we love Americans (and Canadians) please don't throw things at me.
Regards
Rod

Do you have to fire them upside down?

Or do the cylinders revolve backwards?

Sorry Mates, could NOT resist it.

....they have all now been shipped from here I believe. Some will be NIB some will have seen some use but not a great deal. I am not 100% but I think SA did a complete update of their 66s in the last 10 years.

Anyone know what dash number these 66's are?

The only ones I've seen are 66-7's. Regards 18DAI.
