I'm getting a little torqued. My 44 is unable to be fired without holding back the cylinder release. The rod that runs through the cylinder will not come back into place to push the cylinder release back far enough to let it return to normal position, therefore, you can't fire it or cock the hammer. JHC, what a place to leave ya in! Should've bought an old one! New quality ain't the same, and that's a fact. My new 9c runs perfectly. But, when you spend almost a grand on a "Classic" it should work. Last new Smith revolver, I can tell you that. Pay the same for used model, get a better gun. Durn it!

I agree. I've bought 3 new Smith's and 2 of them have made the return trip. An M&P 9 that I finally traded off because it wouldn't shoot consistently (a 6 inch group at 10 yards would have been a major accomplishment), and a 686 SSR. The 686 was returned with a note that said "Honed forcing cone, replaced barrel." Never should have made it out of QC, if they have a QC department any more. My Smith 1911 should have gone back but had a local gunsmith fix it.

Smith has let the quality go downhill. I love my old Smith revolvers (pre-18, 67 no dash, 28-2, and the 686) but wouldn't buy a new one.

SAY IT AIN'T SO! If Smith and Wesson's new revolvers are poorly built, then where do we get good wheel guns? Taurus? Korth?
Will I have to start hanging out at pawn shops? I know a Rhino!

Have owned 3 smiths. A Brazilian contract 1917 model, a pre-lock 617, and a new 340M&P. The only one that has given me problems is the 340M&P, and they did fix the inaccuracy problem...BUT used lead ammunition which they specifically warn against for this model gun. Being the only game in town must have its perks, like the ability to flippantly disregard QA on all revolvers. Since Uberti copies nearly every Colt design before the turn of the 20th century and Colt is a poor excuse for a gun manufacturer these days, maybe they should purchase manufacturing rights for the double action Colts and start producing these. They'd build a good revolver from what I've seen.

Why not? I have a gun shop that deals in used and estate sale stuff. That's where I got my pre-18 and 67. Always have new stuff there.

This is nothing new, I used to belong to the S&W of the week club dureing the Bangor Punta days, every other one had to go back for one thing or another and Im not that picky, as long as they work Im happy. Maybe my luck has improved as I have bought new classics in the M-24, M-21, M-22, M-25 and M-40, all are great shooters with no problems so far!

I have a couple "new" Smiths and I have had zero problems. They have served me well and continue to do so.

Call S&W service and that gun will be on a UPS truck by tomorrow on their dime

Every company lets out a lemon here and there, they will fix it free and have it back to you pretty quick.

IMO there is nothing wrong with the new S&W's and they will fix almost any problem short of abuse for free.......what more can you ask? S&W isn't always able to fix the older guns, just because they don't have the parts anymore.
