Default classic series grips

What are they making the new classic series grips from? They look like laminate to me. And not the attractive laminate they use on working rifle stocks, but the cheap kind that looks like plywood with a dye job.

They are made out of some kind of plasticky, reconstituted, molded, pressed fake looking woodlike substance. I bought some from Smith & Wesson and promptly returned them. Yuk.

Nowdays, I buy old diamond magnas for my J frames instead of that new junk.

They come from Altamont Company. "We use primarily natural woods and composites for our products."

That's like saying a hot dog is made from "beef".

I am a bit confused by the criticism here.
I have a model 27-9 Classic with a 6½” barrel and I think the grips look excellent.
As for the quality of the wood, I have been a carpenter for 40 years and worked with some very exotic species of timber and there is no way my grips look anything like a cheap, ******, plasticky, reconstituted, laminate.

My comments are reserved for the J frame grips as I'm not familiar with any of the others.

I am refering to some of the model 18 classic series I've seen on gun broker etc. The grips look like ****. They don't do justice to the targets and magnas of old in my opinon.

The Heritage Classic grips that come with the new Classic series, as well as sold by S&W for $65.00 are indeed a solid walnut grips, and NOT a laminate as alluded to by some. A call to Altamont confirmed that, and they did say they are not selling these solid walnut grips to the consumer due to contractual agreement made with S&W.

I wouldn't worry about Altamont grips. They are excellent and also have one of the best customer services... with that said.. I prefer Ahrends for no nonsense grips that just fit me very well. I hate rubber grips so its important for me to find wood grips that properly fit my hand. Ahrends makes shooting full loads of 44mag from my 29 enjoyable.
