I'm currently purchasing number 4 of 50 and wanted to find out more info about it. Contacted NRA in Fairfax VA and this is the response I received.
James, I am going from memory, so do not consider this set-in granite information. The guy who put this together is no longer with the NRA, so I can’t get any more clarification.
My memory is that there were 50 sets built for the Anniversary of the NRA law Enforcement Division and then a “proof set”, which is the first one built for our approval, I believe that was actually serial number “0”. So in total there were 51 sets built.
They were all built from working S&W pistols and were all manufactured together and they were “in the white” when made (no bluing had been applied or any other adornments. They were sent to “Barrons” (I do not know anything about Barrons, but their work is outstanding) for the bluing and custom work.
The pistol sets were only available through our Friends of the NRA events, with some being live auctioned, while others were a raffle.
After this I contacted Baron's and found out that they did a high luster bluing and the 24k gold work. All guns are not in sequential serial numbers but numbered as they made 1of 50..etc.
Hope this info helps.
