Shot this one in a match today. I was the only revolver shooter there.
Another view:
4" Carry Comp
I'm thinking about putting a 4" barrel on this one for IDPA:
& not a 686 but still a L-frame:

VERY NICE THREAD.
I am supprised that there have been no blued 686's. I will have to learn to post pics and show off some of my L frames.
Again, VERY NICE THREAD. I have more rounds downrange with a 686 than all other guns and rifles I have combined.
I will be back,
Fred

A stainless 586 exists, at least one, I've seen it. Clearly stainless, not some sort of nickelplate, but it was marked 586 nevertheless.

There where about 2800 "blued stainless" 686 guns out there. The finish is called midnight black.
When I have time I will figure out how to post pics and show you a 4 inch and a 6 inch midnight black 686. Plus a few others.

686-6
I fired 12 rounds out of this gun yesterday. It is brand new and is now my favorite pistol. The single action pull is a bit more than my customized model 19 but its still enjoyable for accuracy. Very smooth action......Highly recommend this for all kinds of shooting

I would have like to show a picture of my 686 first run four inch. It's had over 30,000 rounds of .38 Spl and 3,000 rounds of .357 through it. As it was my duty gun it has taken a beating over the years so it's shy now and doesn't like pictures of it being taken and besides I no longer own it. My wife does and she won't let me shoot it anymore.(sigh)

OK - now that I've got a 686-1M 6" and a 686-2 4", I'll post some photos. But question: why are none of the 6" 686's sporting red dot sights? I'm thinking about a Weigand mount and a Burris Fastfire II for my 56 year-old eyes. If off-topic, I apologize.
Just got it back from being drilled and tapped. Here it is, in a group shot of my revolvers. I'm thinking now about having a plate made to replace the weaver mount of the Burris Fastfire 2 that can be screwed directly into the S&W frame holes, to lower the red dot. Any suggestions?

That is not off topic. I guess those that have posted their pics just don't have any set up that way. Feel free to post your 686 with red dot sights, I look forward to seeing them.

The S&W 686 will live on forever. It doesn't fail to feed, it doesn't fail to eject, no magazines to worry about. Don't need to polish the ramp, nor be concerned about getting sliced when the slide comes back. Shoots about anything. Nine pages so far of outstanding 686s. Keep 'er flowing guys. My 686-4 snubby.

My dad's no dash, "M" stamped 4", box, tools, all papers, even the receipt from when he bought it new. Tuned and matte finished by Frank Glenn years ago. Now lives with my older son.

reppans, nice duo you got there. I almost got me a 617 to go with my 686 about 3 weeks ago, but decided on something else instead. Maybe some time in the near future.

I missed the boat on this the 1st time around. But I'll play along in an effort to keep this thread alive. Here is a pic of my 686-5 on the day I brought it home from the pawn shop. Even though she was dirty, the pictures still don't do her justice. I've since cleaned her up, put a couple hundred rounds through her and I can honestly say this is my favorite handgun. I'm still looking for the right rig so I can keep her with me more often. I've also got a set of combats coming for her that will really make her shine. Beautiful weapons everyone. Thanks for sharing.

Hard to get decent pictures of a stainless gun on a sunny day with just a BlackBerry, so I'm sorry for the picture quality.
Here is my 686-4 with Ahrends cocobolo retro banana grips.

My first duty gun at the Sheriff's Dept.
Mod. 686-3 Midnight Black (blued stainless) w/ 4" barrel. (Pic below was to compare "bare stainless" in background on my 629-4 and "real blue" on my 586 [no dash] in the foreground to the "midnight black" 686 in the middle.)
Some close-ups of the wear and tear on the supposedly "weak" black finished stainless steel (this is after 4 years of duty use in all weather):
This is also after thousands of draws/reholsterings and shooting at least 1x per month (and frequently more) for those four years... I think the reputation the Midnight Black finish got was unfair. I can't imagine a straight blued carbon-steel gun would have held up any better!
