I bought this one in 1984, slightly used. Had it when they announced the recall, and sent it to my friend Mike Stuckschlager in Great Falls to do the modification. Came back with a sweet trigger job. I have since polished out the trigger serrations for a smooth trigger. Shot PPC with it quite a bit. Still one of my favorite and most accurate revolvers.

Adding a couple of more photos of the pre-lock 686SSR no-dash.
Okay...nobody is challenging me on the description.

Thank you sir. Your's is very nice also. I can draw it but I wouldn't know where to start putting it on metal. Ray said it takes years to learn how.
I didn't see a Mr. Davis here: Firearms Engravers Guild of America Home Page

Thats a beauty. Wish I could afford to get that done to mine. I would like to get it engraved to commemorate the friend who left it to me.

Heck no on the too heavy M3Stuart. Stick with her and with practice I think you will start to embrace the extra heft, as well as the extra 2" of sight radius. She is one sweet piece.

A 3" 686 is on my short list.
I saw a 686 Plus Talo Edition for sale on another forum several months ago, and I made a deal with the seller. Beautiful revolver with the non-fluted cylinder. The day before we were to meet for the transfer, he discovered that the barrel was slightly cocked to one side, so he told me he was sending it back to S&W for repair. When he got it back, he decided to keep it.
It was the one that got away...

What kind of grips are on your 4in barrel? I feel like they'd be great on my 5in 686 plus pro

Mine looks exactly like yours, no dash except for the "M". I bought it new in 1986. Its only had about 1/2 dz. rounds thru it by me plus what the factory did when the "M" was stamped in it.
I usually take it with me when I go camping or travel packing it in luggage or a box with other stuff. Its like new, I have the original box, receipt and all other papers and 2 speed loaders.

I've never kept a 686 until now, these both are keepers.
A 686-3 Mag comp, and a 686-1 with 3" barrel installed.

Well, my 686+ 3" arrived about 2 weeks ago, and I finally got to the range last Friday. Two clicks of the rear sight to the right and it shoots dead on with both .357 and .38+P. I shot about 70 rounds.
I will add Ahrends, either cocobolo of mordillo [but have considered maple because of the uniqueness]. What is the favored finish, oiled or the standard?
I have become a fan of shoulder holsters and am currently trying to decide between the Lobo [I already have one for a Colt Magnum Carry] and a PWL that I recently saw on their web site. I'm waiting for a reply from them before making my decision.
Here's my photos.

Bill,
Thanks for the compliment - those are Ahrends finger groove combat grips in coco bolo. The grips have the hand rubbed finish rather than the high gloss option. Hope that helps

After selling off a few and giving a couple of others away I ended up with only my favorites left.
I got tired of constantly swappin' out their lookin' grips for their
shootin' grips and have come to see the beauty in functionality.
Shown below with their ugly rubber shootin' grips......

Two beautiful guns, thanks for the post.
Do you find a big difference between the two guns?
Does one have a smoother, cleaner feel to the action?
Thanks again, Frank.
