My 686-3 which I bought new in October 1989. It has the best factory single action trigger of all my revolvers.

686-4
686-6+
686-6+
I have been watching a 686 .38 only for months in a lgs. (it has been there six months already) I plan to wait another three months and if it is still there I will lay some cash on the counter (a suggestion from forum member) and see what happens. One thought I have is that it is not worthy of residing with the .357 breathern. It goes along with the thought why do I want a .38 only? Because! I know it is comic and I laugh at the thoughts myself. I reason that if the gun is still there and I buy it at the price I have in mind I can hold it as long as I want. And I should be able to make money on it if I sell it.
686 164219 - Medium Frame, .38S&W Special+P Only, Single/Double Action, 7 Rounds, 4" barrel, 6.4 cm Red Ramp/Adj. White Outline, Synthetic Grips, 7.5" 19.1 cm 34.7 oz Stainless Steel Satin
EDIT: I went back in March and laid four hundred dollar bills on the counter and he said No. And I felt so relieved!!!! What do I want a .38 caliber only 686 for? Temporary insanity is what it was.

I probably overpaid for this 686-4 six inch with the four position PPC front sight. Always like the looks of that sight for some reason. The gun had a cheap scope and mount on it when purchased. No back sight.S&W is out of the correct rear sight for this model, So, I ordered an LPA sight which uses the factory scope mount holes. Very nice sight with precise adjustments.

686-6three inch.jpg
[IMG] [/IMG]
Was there a THREE inch 686 with a shorter ejector shroud?
I was lucky enough to pick this 686-6 up off Freeman W a forum member.
I just picked up some new grips today.
They feel great.
There is a photo of my old Rodgers / Safariland grips , they felt better than they looked.
The 3 inch with my Altamont boot grips did not work for me. The gun was too muzzle heavy for my taste. Maybe I will put them on a K frame snub.
S&W custom shop made by Alamont. $40 was a steal. I offered $50
As much as I like this 3 inch I sure would like a 27-2 in 3 1/2
I will keep looking.

Since I just received two "likes" on photos I posted to this thread some time ago, I thought I would update my 686 family, which has shrunken in quantity but improved in quality.
The first two were in my old photo. The one on the right is an unfired 6" -4 PowerPort and it is flanked by a possibly unfired 6" -3 Classic Hunter. In the middle are a 5" -3 National Match and a 4" -3, the only two I use. The NM is my bullseye gun and I carry the 4" while in the woods in case I encounter a creepy crawly critter seeking a warm pants leg to slither up.
I apologize for the imported stocks on the NM - a have a nice set of checkered targets for it but the ones on it are a lot more comfortable to use.
I swapped the 4" -4 in my earlier photo for the 4" -3 (I'm a square butt guy) and sold the others for offers I couldn't refuse, one of the nice results of buying quality guns. As stated earlier, I like Model 66s better so parting with a couple of 686s wasn't too painful.

I only have 4 Smith wheel guns, but here are 3 of them. All are 686-4's. The 6" is a + model. The 2.5 is highly polished but the pic kinda washes it out. Nice shooting guns.
