bought this at a gunshow for 100 bucks....with a box of 38 special ammo and 6 rounds of 357 magnum..awesom gun...acording to the serial number this gun was made betwen 1990 and 1995 i believe

That's a $500-$550 gun these days. When did you buy this? Was it from an individual or a dealer? Did you fill out a form 4473 for it? Inquiring minds want to know.

its not stolen...did a serial number check at the local PD...it panned out fine....and it runs great..individual seller said he wasnt a revolver fan..as to why he didnt just sell it for what its worth is beyond me but itsurely isnt stolen or ever used in a crime

bought it from a private seller..had my PO uncle run the numbers to see if it popped up stolen or used in a shooting..its squeaky clean..as to why he didnt sell for full price beats me....in virginia a form is not needed when doing private sales..just proof of residency such as me showing my drivers license ..thats it....but as a precaution both of us filled out a bill of sale with eachothers info...

Gnut - it's not necessary to make a new thread each time you want to post more pictures - I see you have like 4 posts in 1980 revolvers and a bunch in the Sigma forum. Just post the additional photos to the same thread. This helps to consolidate your threads and gives others the chance to post their threads. It keeps the forums tidy.

I don't have my catalog in front of me but that's a no-dash gun with a serial number starting with AAC. Shipping date is going to be very early 1980s. Probably 82 or 83.

you could get 300$ in ohio easy for one in that condition. you can get like new 586 at the shows for 450$ to 550$

GNut: As the ammo is worth about $20, you really have only $80 at risk with this gun. For that money, you could use it as a hammer and feel fine. I concur with the others. Shine her up, put some wood on her, and enjoy for many years. Great gun, even greater price. Congrats.

Alright, I didn't realize until you put up the second set of pictures that it had the S&W logo on the right side. I believe that only the very earliest of the L frames had that, which I think makes for a more handsome gun. So I had to drag out the catalog: L frames started with AAA in 1980 and were up to AAD by 1981, so yours is from the first year of production. Congrats. I have modest collection of no-dash L frames (8 or 9 of them) and have seen very few with the right-side logo, including my 581 and 681 which are both AAA numbers. Yes, classic gun needs classic looking grips.

That's the best looking $100 gun I've seen in many years. Before you go spending another $100 on wood grips shoot the darn thing with some stout magnum loads. I removed the wood grips from my 586 and put on some Pachmyer Decelerators, the rubbers are not near as pretty as the wood but they take the sting out of shooting full house loads, but then I'm becoming a real recoil sissy in my old age.

Why don't they have gunshows like that around here?

Me: "Hi, what's the best deal you can give me on this here well-worn 586?"
Seller:"$900. Old Smiths are very valuable, you know."
Me: "These aren't that valuable, how about $400."
Seller: "For you, I'll do $950, 'cause you look like a Smith fan."
Me: "You realize you are going up in price, right?"
Seller: "Tell you what, I'll throw in two boxes of ammo and a pistol rug, for a total of $1100. Ain't gonna find a better deal than that around here!"

$100.00 for a nice 586? I purchased one Saturday (95%-private sale) for $400.00 and thought I'd done OK, you did better than OK.

Noticed it had the "M" stamp in the yoke area beneath the model number. I believe that means it went back to S&W and received a factory upgrade that made it more reliable for magnum loads. Congrats!

I'm in Massachusetts and just paid $599.00 plus $30 something in tax and was happy to pay it. It's a six inch with checkered wood grips in near mint condition. I had been looking for one and last saturday while running errands a stopped in a little shop near the house. I never new they sold guns and always thought it was a sports card shop. A little Marlin sign caught my eye on this morning. I walk in and the first thing I see in the case is this near mint 586. The nice old guy (Walter) wouldn't budge on the price so I bough a box of 30-30's thanked him and was on my way. I got a couple miles up the road turned around and gave him the $200.00 I had on me as down payment. Walter said he new I'de be back in a hurry. He said my eyes bugged out for a split second when I spotted the 586. I'm picking it up on Saturday. It has the S & W logo on the right side so from the posts I've read I'm thinking 80 or 81 but I'll get back with more info and try to post some pics. He's got a nice 686 4" for $499.00. I own some Smith's but this is my first Smith revolver and it's beautiful. I can't wait to shoot this gun.

Wood grips that actually fit your hand help a heck of a lot with recoil. The right rubber grips can help absorb some of it and I still like them but until you are getting into real heavy magnums I don't think most really need them. I think some guys must think they are only shooting a magnum when it makes their blood veins stand out from recoil. If that is the only shooting you do then I guess rubber is a good thing. But good grip to hand fit in wood will cover pretty much everything else. I have shot 19's with some lighter magnum loads (158gr at about 1200 fps) and with the lighter frame and good wood grips they weren't nearly as bad as I thought they would be. I guess the wear and tear of your body with age will change some of this.

586 with original speed loader cut wood grips.

The S&W trademark was moved from the left side to the right side and elarged just before WWII,
Interestingly it migrated back to the left side sometime in the early 80's just after the change to unpinned barrels occurred .
Some early 586's do have the trademark on the right side (like the lower nickel 586 in the pic) but are the minority.

My guess is that it made it easier to engrave the comemoratives but,
I dont know for sure why.

I actually bought an Model 586 Serial # AAA 9002 for $150.00 back in the early 1990's that was a police trade-in from A local gun shop.
That "M" you see means it was sent back to S&W for the hammer-nose modification.
Mine did not have the "M and I was told by that I could have the safety mod done for free even though the gun was made in 1981. My guess is yours was MFD' sometime around the same period.
I distinctly recall S&W Historian Roy Jinks telling me to hang on to it,as it was an early version of the revolver. That was in 1992,or so. I'm glad I kept it!

I have AAA9245 since I bought it new in 1980. It has the logo on the right side.

I recently traded for a .357 586 revolver....AAB1946, S&W symbol on the right side of the gun. I have had little to no luck aging or putting a value on it. Its in alright condition now but I have yet to clean it up, etc. The best I could find indicated it may be from 1980 but im not sure. Its blued, original wood grips, 4in barrel. Any thoughts??

Looks like it could be a first year 586 in 1980 so does it have the pinned barrel and recessed chambers that were dropped in 1982 ?

Smith357 that is one nice looking 586! The matte finished 4 inch 586 is at the top of my purchase on sight list. Regards 18DAI
