Default 3" 629 snubbie, Trail Boss, just bought..

Saw this at my local GS & toy supplier. Thought " now that is kind of cool!" Wound up making a deal for it along with a K98k. Got it for $634. (The Trail Boss). The trigger on the gun is great, it has the case hardened trigger and hammer.

A local guy carried it when he went pig huntin'.

It has adjustable night sights, which are cool! SN is RSR 9932.

Magna Ported, all papers in the box.

Nice one. I love the lanyard loop ring holding the grips on too.

That's a good name for it. If you use it at home for an intruder, the muzzle blast will break your eardrums and set the curtains on fire!

Yeah, I noticed them and thought they were kind of neat. Thought at first the gun was all original. Didn't see a pic of one stock until after I put the gun on layaway. I took the K98k home though. The dealer said it came from the factory with those sights, but I think not.
I started checking these out and am finding all kinds of different numbers for how many of these were made. I think some of the early ones, which I think this one is, were lower in production numbers with certain features.
Any body know more about these?

ETA: The box says 103408, which is the first series 1996-1999. Box also has Special Order 9222 and says square butt stocks, although these may be round butt guns.
The grips are S&W logo on both sides.

Thanks, Terry

nice gun, sounds like a good deal too. My 629 has a lanyard loop too. You can order them from Hogue. They were like $7 for 2.

Well, if it is a 629-1 it would not be nickel. They are all stainless. Probably highly polished. The AES prefix puts it in 1984 in the book.

Groo here
I got one some time ago same as yours [ except sight ]
The thing can be a beast but I think the 3 in N frame is the best..
Hint: For heavy loads -- order up the rubber grip for an X frame,
Fits fine and the softer rubber at the back takes care of any
heavy kicking problems...

Are those night sights? I walked away from a 3" 629 with box and papers a few years ago. I've been kicking myself ever since. But then, I remember several guns i walked away from that I should have bought.

Yes, they are. I'm going down there tomorrow to pay some on it, I think I'll get more info about them and take more pics. I'll try and find out if the seller still has the original sights.

Default Mystery sights

Took these pics today. The original owner did not save the original sights, but if you use these once at night, you will probably be blind anyway!

The front sight is some kind of plastic I think. I think I can dress it up and fix it with a Sharpie.

Well, I finally got it home yesterday. Got sidetracked picking up some K98k Mausers, had to wait for a bit on it.

I touched up the front sight, looks better. Put it on the nightstand last night to see the sights. They do glow, but not as bright as my Springfield Loaded SS Novaks. Sure wish I could find out what they are so I can figure out if they are too old or if they are just that way. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

Wondering about the trigger, too. Smooth, is it MIM or case hardened? Hammer looks the same, maybe a little more like case hardened.

I studied the SCSW carefully on these. This one is called the Model 629 Magnum Hunter Trail Boss from RSR, product code 103408, 1996-1999. There were 500 of these made. I know they were made in runs of 500, so thousands of Trail Bosses were made, but, only 500 of each run in a certain configuration.

Hammer and trigger are MIM. It appears that the rear sights are on a blade replacement and could be replaced with a new standard blade. Night sights tend to fade out after about 10 years or so.

Thanks, Nightowl. So, all I need is a stock S&W rear WO blade and a RR front blade to get it back to original. Better than getting the night sights replaced, I guess, unless all you do is change the inserts.

I'm seriously thinking "What do I need this thing for?" That's another caliber! Don't think I'll be doing too much wild hog shooting at night like the previous owner!
That's what I have these for, though.

Very nice revolver for the price. Would make a great outdoor revolver for carry and would knock down a hog with no problem. Looks stainless to me. Rear and front sights looks aftermarket to me. You could call Magnaport and ask what mods they made to the revolver when they ported it. Keep that cold blue or touch up paint handy as the fire coming through the ports will take it off. Lots of folks don't like ported barrels but I do. Try shooting a 4" non ported barreled .44 compared to yours. The muzzle climb is definately reduced.

If it shoots well I'd leave it as is if you'll be carrying it.

Thanks. It is stainless. I know this is a long thread, but this gun is a 1999 Trail Boss, RSR special order.

That is an awesome gun. I suggest you send it back to S&W to have the original sights put on it. Carry that baby proud with .44 Specials under your shirt, and you will have the greatest carry gun in your life, IMHO.
I traded away a Trail Boss a few months ago, in a moment of insanity, the worst mistake I ever made . I am now looking to sell or trade a Colt Combat Commander for a Trail Boss, new or used.. I believe these short barreled Magnums are the future of Concealed Carry for Smith and Colt.
A great gun and you bought it for a song . Congratulations.

Those sights sure look like the Trijicons I have on my 3" 629-2, identical actually.

Mine are 20+ years old and dim as well, but I plan on getting the vials replaced, which is as easy as sending them in to replace the vials. I plan on orange for the rear and green for the front as opposed to the green/green I currently have. My DW CBOB has the orange/green system and I find it a large improvement.

You're going to love that roscoe!

I carry mine anytime I am in the woods in a crossdraw holster - very handy.

Thanks for the information guys. So they can be rejuvenated, that's what I think I'll do. I keep it on the nightstand next to the 1911. Maybe different colors is in the plan.

Default 629 Trail Boss

Hi All,
I just saw one at a local gunstore They said it was new ($859), are they doing a production for 2011-2012 on the Trail Boss? Any info appreciated, I have a 629P Classic "Power Port" and I think the Trail Boss would go great with it for my collection and for carry. Anyway thanks for any info. If info is good on this gun I may trade my 30-30 winchester and a Baretta Stampede just to put it on layaway

Have you shot it yet? I have a custom 3" 29-10 that has been magnaported. It makes a huge difference in recoil and muzzle jump, very manageable. In fact, it's easier shooting than my father in law's Ruger Redhawk.
