629-1 8 3/8" with barrel scope mount!
I have been looking for one of these for a while now....a few small scuffs on the trigger guard but overall nice gun
came with a Leupold 2x scope as well.

Nice find. Those are fairly rare. There were only 4,810 made that way, in 1988 and 1989. I have one in the original box with papers; it left the factory in August, 1988. I have substituted Ahrends stocks, which I highly prefer, but have kept the originals. Here's a pic.

I like that model. I want one.
Does anyone know if that model came with the scope rings
from the factory like the model 29 before it? If so, what brand
were the mounts?
What would be a good price on one of these?

This is my specimen which is stock. The rings came with the gun & they were supplied to Smith & Wesson by Millet. There was also blued steel version (M29) plus blued and stainless 8 3/8 L frame .357 Magnums (586 & 686).

Rings! ? ! ?
To all those with these guns and no rings!
The rings were supplied by Millet and look identical to their "Angle Loc" rings, however the Angle Loc rings will not tighten up when used on the S&W dove tail cuts in the barrel! Please don't ask how I know, 3 set and none will tighten up! ! !
Here's another 29 with the rings.
Here's a 586 with the rings.

Those are neat and were a great idea. Seems it would be perfect for a 22lr version also?

long lost friend...
I am new here.
A web search for a revolver like this, lead me here.
I had one of these a long time ago, when they first came out, and foolishly sold it. I have been looking for another one for many years.
I need to know what the model designation is for these, and if anyone might know where I could find one for sale. I would very much like to aquire another one.
I really appreciate any help I can get on this.
Thanks in advance.

I ordered several sets of rings direct from S&W 10 or 12 years ago and they shipped the regular Milletts in vaccuum sealed bags. No Millett packaging.
But they did not fit, either. However, they can be made to work with some modification. Getting it just right is a bit "fiddle-y", but here's how they turned out for me:
(BTW, I like the Weaver scope better than the Leupold. Heresy! But there it is.)

School me
Thought they were only made in 1988 and 1989.
Smith told me the production date of this one was in 1990.

I hadn't seen the scope mount cuts until recently. I had my .41 magnum (657) drilled and tapped instead.

w/o box or rings I've seen them sell for $700-$800 in good condition
not sure what they're called apart from the stamped model number

I had one with a Leupold 2x mounted, purchased new in 1989. Wish I had kept it. Very similar ring mounting to my Redhawk.

The Model 29 version with scope cuts on the barrel had the product code of 101233. I have three of these M29's in my data base of triple-alpha/four-numeric s/n. The first one is BAR87XX with a date code of Sept 13, 1988. It had a 8-3/8" barrel and a square butt. The 1988 retail price was $439.99 (still had the old price tag on the box).
The last one is a M29-4 with s/n BDA01XX and date code for Feb 13, 1989. Otherwise, same as above. (It's possible the earliest ones were dash-threes, but I don't have that detail, one way or the other). All of them would of been in the time frame of the the old S&W blue & white one piece cardboard box.
I don't have any 629's with the barrel scope mount. I've seen them but have never been able to get enough info to make a data base entry. I do have a 586 and a 686 that were set up for the factory barrel mounted scope rings. They were made in the same time frame as the M29's.
M1AG30, I don't think that's the correct factory box for that 629, if it matters. S&W didn't start using those round corner plastic box until sometime in 2008-ish. I don't see a lot of pistols with both a red dot sight and projected laser dot. Belt and suspenders, buddy. Ultra Dot is a highly regarded dot sight and worth at least $100 on it's own.

I'd buy it just for the rings!
Pitch the trigger guard mounted laser. It couldn't possibly hold zero with any kind of real field use. One bump and it's useless.

I purchased a 629 -1 with factory broached scope cuts recently Ser # BAS55XX and S&W confirmed manufacture date of 9/15/1998. Another serial number data point for this very helpful SWF!
Can someone please scan the factory paperwork about the scope rings I have searched the net with no luck. I did find a one page factory sheet and spec sheet.
If you want a copy of these please e-mail ne at [email protected]

I think you either misheard or miswrote the date. The year should be........
1988.
I have recored other BAS s/n's with 9/88 ship dates. Plus, a September 1998 gun would be a -5.
